How much does research cost? Should we allocate funds (more funds= more success), will you tell us before finalizing the turn, or will it be a surprise?
Also, what is modern equipment? And why isn't X-78C part of it?

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

I believe modern equipment likely means current standard body armor, weapons, etc. Used by the military. (Likely based off of USA military as its easier to get a focus of just 1) Also likely means all current kinds of explosives and utility gear.

Please reread the research description, and as for modern equipment, see what ranger said.

For a short explanation:
You allocate scientists to research projects.
Research projects do not cost anything
You can buy more scientists via catalog.
No, space does not matter.

Also, my theory for why the X-78 Rifles aren't standard military equipment/are more advanced: Experimental and just developed, not likely picked up by any government as of yet for exclusive use.

recruit: 20 rangers (spec ops.) for 20c
60 regular jar heads for 15c
9 scientists for 18c.
1 Whitehawk BC-37 for 18c
1 Land Hopper 391 for 12c
2 H36 interceptors for 44c
3 spare harasser missiles
10 X-78Cs for 5c

135c all gone. And that, my friends, is why we had an economic crisis.

Squad design:
Rapid response squad:
Whitehawk BC-37
(all ranger)
10 rangers armed with X-78s
2 snipers
2 machine gunners
3 scouts (SMGs, interchangeable upon request- they're not meant to engage in active combat anyway)
1 light anti-armor (think LAW)
2 man ATGM team (think TOW).

Defense Squad
Land Hopper
(all military)
50 men armed with whatever they sent them with.

form 2 rapid response squads, temporarily using the Whitehawk on a rotational basis, and a defense squad.
send rapid response squads to places with alien activity.

keep defense squads near major cities (changed every couple of days) use them to defend the city if we luck into a nearby incursion or to clean up past alien activity sites (freeing up rapid response squads to do the fighting)

have H36s engage UFOs if any are spotted in our airspace. Use of harassers is authorized (except over major cities, naturally).

research projects:
find someone who knows something: What the hell happened? Why weren't the nukes fired? and what's with the reports of people disappearing before the invasion? 5 "scientists"
the second C: contact other anti-alien agencies, there must be some by now. 2 "scientist"
UFO defense: look into the best ways to identify UFOs 3 scientists.

development:
Superior firepower: make me a squad support "machine gun" based on the X-78. 9 scientists

edit: reduced the amount of spec. ops due to not having enough planes.
editx2: and noticed we have researchers from the start.

Total cost: 117c

Orders:
The Military Squads are to patrol major population centres. If alien activity is encountered, they are to call in support from the Spec-Ops squad and neutralise the aliens.
The Spec-Ops Squad is to be equipped with X-78.C Assault Rifles and stay on high alert.
All of the scientists are to investigate better long-range communications, given that we no longer have any communications satellites.

Is sending squads to other nations to assist in protection allowed? As well as sharing research and things? I assumed assistance would be minimal from other nations. :/

(IE: That you could assist eachother on missions and sell equipment to eachother but not much else)
