World Divided, Turn 1.2 - Combat [9/9]
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:13:30 pm »

All slots are taken. However, please still submit your program if you want to join the waiting list in case someone 'dies'.

The scenario of aliens attacking earth is not an uncommon one, and can vary a decent bit. However, a relatively common aspect found in these scenarios is the nations of earth rising up together, united. Sadly, that's not what happened when earth was actually attacked.

It started with a sudden announcement from many alliances of the world stating they were all dissolving, and government officials in high places mysteriously disappearing. Almost immediately afterwards, alien UFOs descended into the atmosphere, burning cities and killing thousands. Each individual nation attempted to stand up for themselves, but their militaries, alone, were outnumbered and outgunned as countless military installations fell in great fireballs. As if this wasn't enough, the many satellites in orbit around the earth were quickly destroyed, with some catching a glimpse of countless gigantic ships floating above Earth. The people of Earth were without protection, by themselves, and didn't even know who their enemy was.

A couple of nations with the right people in the right place at the right time were able to quickly start initiatives to defend the nation against further alien attacks. These programs, while divided, seem to be the only chance the planet has of standing up for itself, however divided 'itself' is.

Program Name: ARC (Armored Recon Corps)
Host Nation: Canada
Priority: Focussed on defensive advances and technology intergration for the long haul of the war with superior fortifications.
Nation Bonus: Cold Frontier: Canada's climate remains quite cold for half the year, and as such the people within have grown used to the temperature, and know how to survive it.
Armoured Integration: The focus of the scientists of Canada is on making sure their people get back alive, working to integrate the alien materials as quickly as possible into the armor of their soldiers.
(If needed to offset two bonuses) Low Manpower: Compared to many countries, Canada has quite a lower population compared to its owned land mass, proving to lower standing recruitment.

Program Name: People's Republic Defense Force
Host Nation: North Korea
Priority: To protect the motherland and acquire new technology for our glorious leader.
Nation Bonus: "For The Leader" This nation has a large pool of poorly trained recruits ever at the ready. As such it rarely needs to expend funds to recruit 'volunteers'.
"Public Approval" This nations public approval drops extremely slowly due to various "stress release" camps where those who find themselves brainwashed by the aliens to rebel against the party will be sent to work away their frustrations until they come to their senses.
"Working on Hopes and Dreams" any technology created by this country is generally rushed and faulty. After each use a piece of equipment has a pretty decent chance of breaking though replacements are generally cheap.

Program Name: Australian Anti-Extraterrestrial Taskforce
Host Nation: Australia
Priority: Interrogating aliens to uncover their motivations and operational techniques. This is the only way we can effectively stop the threat they pose to Australia.
National Bonus: Rich resources - Australia has a large amount of various natural resources, which should give it some resistance to alien blockades or the deleterious effects of the invasion in general

Defense Program List

Kiryu-Kai
Based in Japan, the soldiers originating from this place keep the will to fight no matter what, and will stay optimally effective until the very end.
ARC, Armored Recon Corps
Hailing from the cold areas around Canada, this program aims on staying in for the long haul, and turning their country, as well as their soldiers, into an impenetrable fortress that nothing can get past. The science team is staffed with experts in defense, giving a +20% speed increase in all defense technologies.
God's Front, Боги Передние
The motivated soldiers hired by this initiative do it simply to protect their homeland, Russia. The nationalist nature limits the scientists in discovering the secrets of alien technology, though. Because of their limited R&D, the research of alien technology is reduced by 75% speed. This is made up for by the essentially free lower-quality military squads and much cheaper special operation squads.
PDE, Programa de Defensa Extraterrestre
Located in Brazil, this program has hired scientists specialized in anatomy of both theoretical aliens as well as regular humans. This gives a +15% increase in speed to the research of autopsies and gene manipulation techniques.
ADU
The men and women of this program from the United Kingdom are determined to never stop resisting, and have been allotted better possible contacts in the ship industries, as well as better shipyards. This with the addition of pre-invasion research into engine tech allows the commander to choose to EITHER get a 10% discount on any ship, or a 10% increase of speed on any ship, but not both. Their government has also assigned multiple strategy and tactics masters, giving the program a decent advantage when it comes to planning. However, due to the globe-encompassing nature of the nation, ADU has more land to cover, and therefore has to deal with a bit more alien invasions on their land.
PRDF, People's Republic Defense Force
Determined to protect their glorious leader, the North Koreans in this program have access to much more soldiers for the same price, but at the cost of quality. Their strategically placed 'camps' allow for a higher 'terror' rating, letting them operate in situations where other programs would be shut down. However, the technological status of their host nation means that the "development" part of R&D will fail to operate nearly as well, so the end result of their research will usually end up worse than another program's research.
Area 51, United States Department of Alien Contact, Control, and Containment
Determined to keep the alien scum out of their country, the American workers in the near mythical Area 51 are able to procure a 20% increase in all income, thanks to the increased funding from their government.
AAET, Australian Anti-Extraterrestrial Taskforce
Determined to find out the reasons of their alien invaders, the Australian program is able to tap into the nation's vast natural resources, allowing the nation to have enough resources to counteract any alien blockade's main effect, allowing goods to still be bought during a blockade at a 40% price increase. AAET still needs to watch out, because blockades can still easily cause the civilians to panic if left going on for too long. It is also able to ignore the effects of lost civilian trade routes.
HHS
The HHS, Syria's answer to the alien threat, is founded on the philosophy that war is won with weapons. With this in mind, the Syrian government is willing to throw much more money at their program than any other sane government, giving them a 20% increase in all income, like Area 51. Their experienced SpecOps soldiers start two ranks above the rest of the programs' SpecOps (though their military squads are unaffected), but they've also been assigned to deal with the newly organized rebels as well as the aliens.

This is basically the registered nations, and their interpreted bonuses. Please, post here if you think any of the nations' bonuses is too OP or UP.

EDIT2: Version 3. Added HHS.
EDIT: Version 2. Changed AAET's bonus per Kevak's advice.

I think that australia should still suffer a panic raise due to blockades, they get a lot of foreign commercial goods shipped to them, that likely will cause discontent if they stop being shipped.

Perhaps prices for materials that normally are imported but are available on Aussie soil raise a tad if blockaded rather then being unavailable. And perhaps panic if it goes on long.

Program Name: HHS
Host Nation: Syria
Priority: Defeating the aliens through superior equipment.
Nation Bonus: Wealthy: The Syrian Government has large amounts of money to throw at problems.
Experienced Soldiers: Imbroiled in a civil war for years, the Syrian forces are battle-hardened.

Insurgent Presence: Although the alien presence united many of the insurgent groups with the government forces, some of them continued to resist the government.

Waitlist, I guess.

Program Name: PSOG (Polski System Obrony Gwiezdnej - Polish System of Space Defence.)
Host Nation: Poland.
Priority: Nuking the homebase of the aliens to kingdom come.
Nation Bonuses:
Seen worse: The alien invasion is not the worst the population has seen, and tends to panic less.
Unimportant: Aliens tend to skip Poland, as the country is relatively small and out of the way.
Nation Penalties:
Illegal: By international law, this organisation is illegal and is a presumed terrorist group. PSOG is secretly funded by the Polish government, but cannot interact on friendly terms with the UN and the like.

Turn 0
The calm before the storm

The commanders all arrived at their bases at similar times. Each base was bustling with people, ready to protect their nation to the very end. However, the individual programs were not fully ready yet. They were missing equipment and soldiers for their upcoming battle.

Each commander had a dossier on the state of the world prepared. Each was not very pretty, yet still remained optimistic. The societies of Earth had not collapsed into anarchy, and all the governments were still functioning. The cities shelled during the initial attacks had many survivors, and the militaries are finally regrouping against the threat of future attacks by the aliens.
While it still looks doubtful humanity stands a fighting chance if the aliens actually tried, all the commanders could do was hope.

Spoiler: The World (click to show/hide)

Recruiting
The first thing any self respecting program would do is hire special op squads, or maybe military squads, if they feel like risking it. Special Op squads are the backbone of (most) programs, and do most of the heavy lifting. Think of them like soldiers in XCOM. They cost quite a bit though, at 20 credits per 20 person squad. They level up as a whole squad, but you can equip them individually.
Military Squads, or their equivalent (Russia has Volunteer Squads, which are literally free and not nearly as skilled as regular military squads. North Korea has conscript squads, which are cheaper, worse, military squads.) are also an option. Military squads are more or less the generic mooks of your organization. They can do everything SpecOps squads can, but at much less effectiveness. They can't level up at all, and can only equip stuff (as a whole squad) you have production lines for. Best used for either throwing extreme amounts of people at a problem, doing low-level missions, etc.
Production
Production is handled quite simply. When you can produce something, it'll show up in your production report, with its cost. Then, you can build it and get it the next turn. Alternatively, you  can build a satellite production base and assign the new base to a single production line. Production lines offer virtually infinite amounts of an item. If you setup a production line for plasma guns, everyone and their kids in your program can get a plasma gun. You can also ship production lines to other players, letting them use that near infinite supply at the cost of you not being able to.
Research and Development
You can research anything you want, within reason. Research is, well, researching something and figuring out how to do things. Development is the practical use of something. They're not mutually exclusive, so you can research and develop an item at the same time. However, while research is a guaranteed success after X time, production is more iffy. For example, if you wanted to research a Hyperdrive for some reason, you'll definitely be able to find out how hyperdrives work within a reasonable time period, but the actual design relies on the development side. With good bonuses/rolls, you can get a super hyperdrive which does awesome things, or a hyperdrive that blows up half of the time you try to use it.
In short: You can research anything. Research succeeding is guaranteed. Quality of designs/physical products gained from R&D is not guaranteed, and can be influenced with bonuses.

Keep in mind research isn't limited to reverse engineering. Among lots of other things, doing stuff like "Try to find people selling a fast attack ship in the market" falls under research.
Researching & Scientists
Allocate an amount of researchers to any research project you want to start. Research projects do not cost funds, only scientists, and maybe their topics of research. (Meaning if you autopsy a corpse, say goodbye to that corpse.)
See your personnel tab for your scientists amount. For an example of researching: "I allocate 15 scientists to Project A, and 5 to Project B"

Anything else
Ask. Please.
"Missing content" can usually be handled via researching it. Want ships? Look for them. Or design them.

The government of Japan decided that the best way to deal with aliens was via superior, or at least equal, technology. With this in mind, a large underground lab which was constructed earlier under Tokyo was seized by the government, which then began to rebuild most of it into a functioning base, where all their future operations would start at.

When public access to some select buildings in Brasilia was cut off, most people didn't complain, but were curious at the sudden amount of foot traffic into those buildings.

The officials were at first confused as to the future location of their base, but then were extremely lucky in their search, thanks to the strict policy of conserving resources in the base creation process. Government documents concerning an abandoned program were found, leading to a hidden complex military base. From there, the base was cleaned up a bit, upgraded, and was ready to go. This extreme stroke of luck saved them about five credits in base construction fees.

Most likely thought unimportant, North Korea, upon seeing signs of alien invasion, activated PROJECT SAVE-THE-GLORIOUS-LEADER and the local military was immediately converted to a force determined to keep their nation on the top, where it belonged.

To facilitate the new goal of the military, an unused underground palace was converted into a military base. The conscripts get a bit confused at the chandeliers in the gun range, but other than that, it's a pretty good location. Thanks to the nationalism found in North Korean, it was easy getting two squads of "volunteers" to begin with.

No one really thought Syria would divert their attention to the aliens. With the invasion, the rebels of the nation grew in power. No one really knows how, but some say increased support for their cause, while others blame the aliens for supplying them.
Regardless of this, Syria started pouring extreme amounts of their income and GDP into an alien defense program, even going so far as to have it absorb a large part of the military. Experts in weapon production from around the world were hired and brought to the new central military base.
