Drain a Volcano. Now attempting!
« on: December 10, 2014, 03:01:07 pm »

My friend challenged me to build a glass fortress inside a volcano. I found the perfect embark for this!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There is a water source (the aquifer) Trees, sand, no hostile neighbors, and of course, A VOLCANO!!!!

I will start a little bit now, but I should do most of the work over winter break. Wish me luck!!

Here is my starting supplies, note the large amount of bags I brought.

And here is my location at the very start:

quite hilariously, the wagon spawned in an area without enough space, so it got instantly scuttled.

General outline of my plan can be found here

I guess I can give it a try, but not until winter break when I have lots of free time.

It can be done, but it's both incredibly time consuming and potentially dangerous. So it's extremely, extremely dwarfy.

Would I have to pump the magma all the way up to the surface to get it out, or can it go through fortifications I carve in the walls?

Should seep right out of fortifications, though it'd probably incinerate an engraver in the process.

There are ways to safely breach volcanos or magma pipes detailed on the wiki, though I imagine many overseers don't care enough to use them.

I'd strongly recommend coupling whatever system you plan on using, magma flows really slowly.

I think the idea is to engrave fortifications into the map border to get the magma off the map. This should not endanger dwarfs at all.
If you get magma to the map border with no further flow obstacles, it will flow off. Fortifications work fine.

Volcanoes constantly and automatically refill from the top - as i understand it, randomly picked tiles in the "top" z-level of the volcano are randomly filled up to 7/7 magma. Neat to look at when the top level is otherwise entirely open space, but a bit of a hindrance when trying to colonise the magma vent. You _may_ be able to prevent this magma refilling by obsidianising the top level, i haven't tried (yet).

Make drains on the lowest possible level (normally at semi-molten rock level)  and link them to constantly working atom-smashers to remove the magma. Hopefully it will not kill too much your FPS. Be sure to floodgate/door if you want to refill the volcano.

But yes, it should be doable.

DS managed to do this in Roomcarnage (which I recommend you google and read because it's awesome).

Basically what he did was breach the volcano and dump the excess magma into the caverns, which is a very good way to rid yourself to extra magma (it either flows over the maps edge, evaporates, or forms shallow magma pools all over the cavern which is awesome in itself). After the volcano is drained, you can build whatever you want in it. To refill the tube, simply close the drain into the caverns.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this method is considerably faster than others because it uses gravity to assist the magma draining out of the volcano (it can fall instead of be pumped) and pressure mechanics (which DO work for magma, see the thread about the pressurized magma cannon) spread the magma extremely fast into the caverns.

Just drained my volcano into my first cavern in an alternate universe of my current fort. Well, two or three z-levels worth of magma.

Yes, magma is created from thin air at the highest z- level of the volcano (magma rain, fuck yeah). However, not much is created.

Well it depends on how many magma outlets you have. One outlet is impractically slow (but still should be more than the imput of the magma rain), but something like six-seven will drain your volcano in probably a few years.

Wouldn't your dwarves constantly get burned alive by the magma rain tho?

If you put them inside the volcano, yes.
