Spoiler: Your link (click to show/hide)

Sorry I wont look at your file but armor equipping seems to work pretty well in my fortress. They are even wearing all gauntlets and highboots.

My dwarves are not equipping high boots.

Actually they're not equipping boots at all ; other armor items are fine though.

well it's like a peer to peer site but there is no peer to peer.  if you ever used anno files or mega downloads.  you are basically doing the same thing.  but i'll try to upload the files to dwarf download place and do a link then.

(edit: kinda help if I linked the download page, lol.)

basically, I have just an upper body item; uniform, which replaces dresses.  My male dwarfies will wear a kilt, but not a dress.  for the lower body I use breeches(liked the name better than trousers and thus did the same as I did with dresses.) for the head there is only the helm or cap.  for the feet I replaced socks(see above) with the name of wraps and that's all the clothing.  the armor, breastplates, grieves, leggings, leather armor, low and high boots is still there in the files also.

Everything is shaped.

Have you tried toggling the over/replace clothing button with r?

I have not tried "replace clothing" settings yet but, frustratingly enough,
with "over clothing" enabled, my uniforms look like this
(note the **x** indicates item type no dwarf will equip for me);

leather armor (breastplate slot)
mail shirts
cloaks
hoods
weapons
**helms**
**gauntlets**
**high boots**
**shields - sometimes work, sometimes do not
_________
observed equipment also includes:
flasks
backpacks
quivers
ammo** - still sometimes a bit 'screwy' and not consistent

Yeah your problem can probably just be solved by setting clothing to be replaced. Boots can't be worn with shoes, helms can't be worn with caps, gauntlets can't be worn with mittens so for all those items there's an item of regular civilian clothing that stops the dwarf from wearing the armor. Not sure about shields though, are you using any weapons of non-dwarven origin or are modded that might require the use of two hands? As for ammo I don't have any experience creating working archer squads (though I have made some before just never sent one into combat), but I've heard of problems with it I just can't remember. I'm pretty sure you can't have an archer in a squad with dwarves that aren't archers at least which might be the problem.

For the most part they will wear stuff I think. Just make sure you have plenty of each type of armor piece before you change it to replace clothing because dwarves will instantly undress and run to get new stuff. It can lead to a lot of bad thoughts, dwarves hate being naked

True.

gauntlets can't be worn with mittens

I don't think that's right. Mittens are a "cover" layer, so they would go over the gauntlets (and, according to http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Armor they should both fit). Gloves fit fine under gauntlets as well. My guess would be that Chaosegg doesn't have enough gauntlets, or he's assigned his military to wear two *pairs* of gloves (or two pairs of gauntlets).

I checked the files for the gauntlets since I didn't think there was anything that might mess it up and I thought it wouldn't work based off of how gauntlets have a layer permit of fifteen and mittens have a layer size of fifteen. Though mittens do have a layer permit of 20 with gauntlets having a layer size of 15 so if they went over the gauntlets rather than under them it would work fine. So the problem could be the dwarves insisting on putting their gauntlets on wrong (probably not) or ordering two pairs of gauntlets to wear.

I've noticed that it also extends to companions. While they'll put boots on just fine, if they're wearing a cap or an extra set of gloves/mittens, then they'll refuse to put helmets or gauntlets on. You have to trade away the cap and extra gloves/mittens for it to work right.

I've changed all my uniforms to "replace", now but when I look at individual dwarf inventories in-game,
It appears many of them will only wear one (Left or right) gauntlet and/or one right high boot, and no left  :o
Any ideas?

My uniforms are pretty standard light-full-coverage builds, with socks, legwear gloves, and mittens of their choice added to
mail shirt, leather armor, cloak, hood, gauntlets, high boots, helms, shield

In know it's prety obvious, but, do you have listed your boots and gauntlets both? :) My dorfs are equipeing all stuff expect shields pretty good, only problem is with miner and woodcuters, They are running around picking up equipment whole time... what is frustrating. And you can try use more layers of robes/cloacks, some of my minions have two cloacks.a
