Pledge a vendetta against the fool who made my first today coffee awful.
Anyway, science won't do itself. Put a nice hazmat suit on, take some sample bags and a knife, and scissors if possible.
Step outside the ship, and get samples of the soil and plants.

in keeping with his paranoid nature Mark readies his SMG as the birds don't have any visible armour and his rifles rate of fire would be to slow if attacked by the swarm

Alright, listen up. Capture as many birds you can. You can kill some, but we need at least a few alive.
Lean back and be leader.

Contact Geo 7
"Naturally, naturally. We managed to gain a lot of surface information on descent, and I thought I'd check if you found anything on the surface."
***
"There are likely thousands of alien microbes, which we'd be unlikely to fend off and have no treatment for. Good thing we're wearing enviro-suits, right?", glaring at Theron and Alex. "Anyways, I'm no biologist, but given their relatively bright coloration, I'd think the white ones are more aggressive, or at least more capable in a fight. I'd suggest we try to avoid them."
If I can get to the water without venturing near the white birds (I'll go near gray if necessary, but try to avoid them as well), take some samples of the water, and run some tests on it.
Geo 7 doesn't respond. Guess they have something better to do.

You walk carefully towards the lake while trying to avoid angering the birds. The nearest one is definitely watching you, as it keeps its beak pointed directly at you, but otherwise doesn't seem very angry. You wasted your worries.

Water in the lake is murky and you can clearly numerous dusty motes floating in it. You put sampler into water and let it fill. It is almost full when a... thing... lazily swims into visible area.
(The thing is is kinda hard to describe so I drew simple image of it.)
Spoiler: THING (click to show/hide)

This very ugly thing suprises you so much that you pull your hand and the water sampler out of the water very fast, in turn suprising one of the black birds near. It buffs itself up, spreads its wings, opens its mouth and lets out a terrible screech. You are close enough to see the second mouth, very teethy one, inside the first one. The ancient horror films suddenly springs into your mind and you almost lose your footing.

Hmm.
Holster shotgun. Take out my net launcher and ready it. If one of the birds comes close, blast 'em. Otherwise hold fire and stay with the group.
(Damn. Thought you woulda made a joke about me going out with a bang. Bah!)

Follow directions of the research team, and remain cautious. Never know what could happen with these things. Definitely prepare the rifle to quickly be aimed.

Alex barely finishes his command when one bird near Jonathan suddenly starts acting up. Then it and 6 others explode into could of feathers and red mist under fire of Alex's escorts. It doesn't look like they are very clear with the consept of "alive". Rest of the birds take the hint and with suprising ease launch themselves into air and fly to other side of the lake.

The fools here are obviously IT guys, it's their job to ensure everything runs smoothly. You swear to post their personal email adresses into shady internet sites, hopefully ending on spammers hands. That will teach them!

You put on your enviro-suit and gather your sampling tools. While the airlock elevator lowers you down on the surface you notice how close the herd of ox creatures have come, they are around 80 meters or so from the ship. Not letting it to bother too much you kneel down on ground and cut samples of plants and soil with your knife.

Spoiler: Map (click to show/hide)

The Froggy Ninja has not responded so I guess we have opening for a biologist.

Name: Guni Debres (Female)
Description: Guni has always wanted to go to another world. Space is awesome and aliens are awesome. Her favorite creatures are fish which she finds fascinating. Contrary to rumor she has no problem eating them, taste is in fact one thing she always attempts to note when studying a creature, whether herself or by blind proxy (a fact which some of her peers loathe her for).
Role: Biologist

Jonathan mumbles a number of curses under his breath, gripping his sidearm for several seconds even after the thing exploded into a fine mist. As the adrenaline slowly leaves his system, he manages speak.

"There's a...thing...In the water. Similar to a manta ray, I think. Got a water sample, though. Now for one from the river."
Head for the river, and take a sample from it.
"Oh, and, I can't say I like how close those cow-like creatures are getting to the base. Maybe when we head back, we should try and chase them off?"

First come first serve. You are in.
What's the plan? Am I retconned in this turn or will I appear on the next one?

I'll say you were on the ship all along, doing something. Maybe sleeping, maybe sorting out data gathered during landing procedure, or someting else. You decide, I'll try to handle it.
Go ahead and make action for next turn.

Just to clarify in case it was unclear, it was the birds who exploded. The thing in water is still fine.

Put the samples back into the bags, and return to the airlock. Make sure I am pure and clean, and do scans on the samples for dangerous chemicals, then for unknown bacteria.

Wake up. Aw shit I slept in! Get into my pressure suit and click my mic to all channels. Didn't anybody notice that someone was still asleep after we hit the planet?! Rrrrrr, screw all you guys!! O:<

Aggressively click the mic off of 'SEND' and grump over to where we keep the personal flyers. Requisition one, also a sidearm, our equivalent of binoculars, and something to get tissue samples and catch small live creatures (bugs!) in. Once I have all my stuff head out and take off in the flyer. Circle once around the base, get a feel for the land.

"Someone try to recover any bodies that haven't been EXPLODED."
"well I would rather not risk any puntures till we know if there are any deadly virus's around"
Mark checks the bodys confirming they are dead with a single headshot each to the intact ones then dragging them out of the pile to be brought back to the base"

"Oh, and, I can't say I like how close those cow-like creatures are getting to the base. Maybe when we head back, we should try and chase them off?"
"yeah I agree, lets just get the last of the samples before trekking back"
