What's with blood barrels?
« on: December 09, 2014, 05:29:33 pm »

As the subject says, I see these in the embark screen and with traders a lot.  Aside from being perfectly gross, do they have any use or reason for existing?

Not really, no. Unless you create your own use for them through modding.

But as it is, they are useless.

Blood can't be cooked?  I mean blood + guts + flour = black pudding...

Or maybe you can feed blood to an ethical vampire?

It would give the barrels some use. You could probably mod in the first one, but I'm not so sure about putting the second in the game with just raw modifications alone. Though I haven't tried it, so it may be better for someone with actual experience to comment on that.

At the moment, there aren't really any ethical vampires. The closest to an ethical vampire would be one that isn't hungry at the moment. I guess if your adventurer was a vampire and you didn't drink blood, that would count too.

yea the whole point of vampires is they are immoral creatures.

If you have one and want the power of having one, you have to take the chance of having your legendary weaponsmith drained while she is sleeping.

They're useless.

They're not even good for Armok, because this blood is already spilt.

Kill vampire. Drain their blood into a barrel.
Dump barrel into local drinking well.
Citizens drink from the contaminated well, creating more vampires. Go back to step one.
Repeat process, while selling spare barrels on the side to deranged overseers who are in need of immortal fortresses.

It's genius.

I think I had a set-up in my personal modifications to make a random few vampires moral by giving them a slim chance to not want for blood. I can't remember though. Lost the entire mod when my old desktop failed.

Well vampires won't drink from each other, so if you have all of your legendaries turned into vampires then you can just feed them the peasants that immigrate in...

Okay, using asventure mode to contaminate a well is really smart.

It's slightly less dwarfy than the other methods, which are all fairly complicated. you'd think 'you there, bleed in this hole!' would be easy to set up, but...

guys, guys, I was speaking in jest about the vampire blood :)

... but not in jest about the black pudding.  Blood sausages has been eaten for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It's very nutritious.

You know how you can't clean blood above ground? The reason there isn't blood covering the entire world after a year or two is because whenever merchants pass through an area they scoop it up into barrels. You don't really buy the barrels so much as pay them for their valuable service.

Then why aren't there barrels of vomit too? I'd pay to have merchants clean up above-ground vomit!
