Is there a way to automatically forbid eggs?
« on: December 09, 2014, 05:19:12 pm »

I'm sick of my dwarves grabbing my dragon's eggs when I'm distracted, preventing them from hatching. I usually just deal with this by locking the creature in until the eggs hatch, but I need the dragon for fort defense. And it's very annoying to have to micromanage it like that. Is there some way to automatically forbid eggs after they're laid (optimally, only that specific kind of egg) so that dwarves don't go and take them?

Yes, they do not need booze, they can work entirely off of water.

You would think that, but the guy thought encasing himself in fire was a good idea.

I think you can make doors locked to dwarves but open to animals.  Have you tried that?

By the way, I congratulate you on getting a breeding pair of dragons.

Before 40.19 you could pasture the female into a 1x1 room with the nest box.

40.19 introduces contact pregnancies, which means both the male and female would have to be in the same room.  You can forbid the door after they are in.

I'm pretty sure you can manually forbid the eggs through the stocks menu, as well. Though that takes micromanagement.

Dragons would be fun, but it seems like using them for fort defense would be counterproductive, unless all your stuff is made from non-combustible materials.

I had a dragon attack my fort and it died fast enough, but it proceeded to light the entire surface on fire, leading to a long string of collapses from the upper parts of burning trees, causing all these micro cave-ins and pausing the game repeatedly.

It also lit a couple of artifacts on fire and I had to make pond designations above them to get the dwarves to throw water on them.

Thanks. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

I just like having giant, fire-breathing lizards as war machines :P The surface of my fort is pretty much all burned up anyway, and after a few accidents I've fire-proofed most of my fortress.

Make sure none of your food stockpiles accept the eggs, and they aren't allowed for cooking. Then your dorfs won't touch 'em.

Nothing is really fireproof against dragons, I don't think. I think even adamantine will melt and boil from long exposure, it's just some burn/melt/boil faster than others.

Dragons and other superfireimmune critters are.  Actually, anything sufficiently cold will do it.  Take nether cap, multiply that by 1000

and make it a breathe attack :o

Ahem! Just forbid eggs in your stockpiles, and allow whatever eggs you want, like turkey and crocodile.

You can also step through the contents of the nestboxes with the cursor and pressing 't' to forbid the eggs. Still micromanagement but you don't have to imprison the dragons.

Do dragons breed now? I thought they didn't because they didn't have child tags...

Anyway, the locked door thing is the best way to keep dwarves out, at least until you can get in and forbid the eggs manually. You may want to unlock the door afterwards though to make sure the dragons don't go wild in the back room of your fortress...

Anything with a BABY or CHILD tag will skip those steps.  In vanilla, that means newborn dragons are considered adults.  But they still grow according to their bodysize tags.

Also, maybe Im a skeptic, but perhaps the OP used other means to get a breeding pair . . .

Actually, I just added the baby/child tags. Didn't think it'd work otherwise. What's the "other means"?
