Animal hair thread?
« on: December 09, 2014, 04:52:28 pm »

it just sits in my farmer's workshop and i can't dump it from the shop unless i deconstructed it... useless?
and how to i get rid of it other than just deconstructing my workshop?

Edit: i guess what i'm asking is how do i get it out of the workshop and either in stockpiles or dumped? i can't find hair thread anywhere, and it doesn't seem to count for thread (yarn or cloth)

It's not entirely useless.  Your doctors will use it to sew up your injured dwarves.

Spun animal hair is listed under "thread", along with all the weaveable types. And it gets dumped normally. If it doesn't happen for you, your dumping routine is probably faulty - you need a designated garbage "d"ump zone and if the workshop is outside, your refuse options must be set to "collect outside refuse" (o-r-o), and you need dwarfs with the refuse hauling labour who can access both workshop and dump.

There's no pressing need to remove hair thread from a workshop, it's pretty light stuff and won't normally lead to cluttering.

I consider animal hair thread quite an important material since thread is instantly made into cloth otherwise and animal hair thread isn't used for anything so it can be used in a hospital.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

I had a similar issue, with a workshop with a corpse and a few items they just refused to dump, stockpile, or otherwise deal with. I eventually resorted to deconstructing the workshop and they promptly moved the corpse two tiles over to the refuse stockpile.
I also had another issue where some stone blocks were in the way of traps I needed built, so the trap construction was halted. The dwarves just ignored dump orders, linked stockpile orders, and everything else I could think of (including burrowing a dwarf with the blocks, a dump site, and a stockpile, although not all of them at the same time). Eventually I forbid the blocks, and then unforbid them, and finally Dumped them, and then it worked. I have a vague recollection there is a bug involving a hidden forbid tag somewhere.
Thus: try to forbid the items, unpause/pause, unforbid them, and then either wait for normal hauling, or dump them. If this doesn't work, deconstruct the workshop and rebuild it.

I don't think it exists. I tried creating a stockpile with absolutely everything enabled and set it to take from the farmer's workshop. No dice, it's not handled properly.

That's usually not an item _in_ but rather _on top of_ a workshop - if the item is directly visible on top of the workshop's graphics and is listed when looking at the tile (and not at the workshop's inventory). Those are items stuck in un-walkable workshop tiles and can indeed only be moved by demolishing the workshop itself. I've seen this happening when cave-ins throw items around or when logs from a falling tree rain down on a workshop.

You can make it so your dwarves don't automatically make cloth from your weave-able cloth through the workshop orders menu (o-W-l) I believe.

Being able to stockpile the non-cloth thread sure would be nice though. Or having a way to select what type of thread/cloth you want to be stored in your hospital zone, so it will at least be thrown in a box.

Thanks Larix!

That explains it. The corpse was from a Giant Kea shot down by caravan guards, so it makes sense it would fall on whatever tile was below it, and if it's unwalkable, well, unfortunate...

Couldn't you link the workshop to a stockpile and have an extra stockpile for reserve thread?

Yarn, silk, and metal thread stockpiling has been fixed, at least. It's just the hair thread that's still an issue. Should belong under the yarn category, or as an extra option (like prepared meals.)
