What sorta era is this? Any magic? What sort of ranged weapons are there? Any lore we should know about? How common are small books, of the sort that you can shove in a pocket when not reading and arent super expensive?

What sorta era is this? Any magic? What sort of ranged weapons are there? Any lore we should know about? How common are small books, of the sort that you can shove in a pocket when not reading and arent super expensive?

Era wise, i'm going for a invented era for the basic reason that i can avoid the problem of historical anachronisms and flat out invent stuff with out the need for lots of lengthy exposition.

Now the setting is going to be a low fantasy, probably a bit dark ages/ pre roman with a scattering of larger states around.

On magic, well i'm not great fan of haveing a wizard that follows the party around and casts zap at the monsters.
It's a bit dull and reduces such grand concept to walking artillery.
So magic will be rare, costly and powerfull.

What sort of ranged weapons are there?
Im aiming to have a good array of weapons both ranged and melee weapons, so there will be bow, crossbows, javelins and throwing weapons of all kinds.
I going to try to keep weapons to a few simple types with clear english names.

Books are common only in the larger citys, outside them books are a rarity but not vastly expensive.

Well lets get stared then.

The salty sea air fills your lungs, as slowly your ship drifts in to the harbor at Malapourt.

Malapourt, an all insignificant spur jagged slate gray rock projecting from the eastern cost.
It's little more than a harbor next to a small rocky outcrop of covered with a few huts.
Still well placed at the center of the trade winds,  it is a good place to organize for what may lie ahead.

From here one could soon be in the frozen plains of Valerian steppes or the sun backed fortresses of the Kasuyu.

Plots and plans are hached as you separate out facts from rumors.
As drawn brakes you have settled on two choruses of action.

1) The  Valerian lords  are despite for skilled fighting men to guard there valuable gold mines
2) The King of Orthisk has long been plagued by savage raiders from the Krullrethan and hopes to raise a sta


With the plan confirmed you split up and head out to the market you buy the vital gear you will need.

(Ok you should give me a list of gear and I'll role to see what you can find and afforded.)

A hatchet, a cloak, a coil of rope, flint and tinder, A bag of metal spikes, a pair of spear heads, and a knife.
Oh, and a few candles. ANd waterskins. And a net.

A bow and a bundle of arrows would be nice, as would non-perishable food for a good while and a wineskin or two. I'll also look for a short spade, my own knife, and something to carry all of this in. Lastly, a spear would probably be the most important item on my list.
