troll baby stitter.
« on: December 09, 2014, 11:32:48 am »

Had a trollwander in to my fort. My miner getting bored so i accedently opened a cavern.  This was before i had much of a military, and i wasnt paying attention.  After killing the elf trader he go tag teamed by two children. About 15 pages of blue reports interspersed with a few dodges. So are my kids going to be awesomesauce when the grow up?

Also the other elf froze in place so i missed tradeing that year.  I need the elves for war animals.  I ve got 50 total dorfs 18 of them are underage, my closest nieghbours are goblins and a tower.

Clearly this is the newest form of dwarven child care. Troll babysitters.

Trolls can take more punches, so they're better dwarven babysitters

They don't have innate fighter and dodging skill.

I love you all so much, arguing over the childcare merits of various monsters and savage races. This is a wonderful place, why didn't I come here sooner?

The advantage of trolls is that they are available in large numbers during a siege and can be easily baited into cage traps with a couple of doors on the surface. Can you breed trolls? It might be nicer for the younger kids to play with trolls their own age...

I used to have to regularly clear the kids out of the troll cages by way of dumping them onto an artifact hatch in an engraved statue garden, by way of a 35 z tower extending entirely up out of the fort.

They joined the regular crundle and rutherer purges in horrifying my dorfs until I accidentally created a bloodcano by forgetting I originally designed the system so I could open the hatch and drop stuff onto the open space under a bridge controlled by a second lever, and a year or so in game later forgot why I did this, deciding to rebuild the bridge while redesigning stuff, and choosing to link it to the hatch lever.

After a good 30+ deaths ontop of it one day I ordered the lever pulled and my decision to ALSO have the drop shaft work as a mist generator due to a waterfall I can turn on and off meant there were fortifications around it in all of the bedroom and workshop areas above the gore-hatch... so the hatch opens, the giblets drop onto the drawbridge, which opens a second later, producing an unbelievable explosion of body parts and blood erupting upwards through a good five z levels of my fortress.

Where was I going with this... oh yeah, trolls happily bred just fine in cages, now would probably have to put them in a breeding facility or maybe a single cage to get them to keep breeding.

I had a pit filled with four chained blind cave ogres, and they had a child in less than a year :) No-one ever fell in there with them, though, dwarf or invader..

As for a less well known technology... uh... not sure if it counts, but I think I invented a bloodcano accidentally?

I was playing in a really nice looking spot, except the gobs were refusing to show up, by the second year I had been busy updating the military gearing, getting artifact micromanagement down better, and decided to set up a trauma chamber to clear out the billion crundles and whatnot I ended up with after I opened the caverns and set up cage traps at various chokepoints.

I had originally built a big drop shaft going through all the main rooms, and decided to set up fortifications around them and repurpose the drop shaft into a waterfall/mist-generator as well.

To keep the drop/disposal capabilities I have a drawbridge under the impact hatch so I can have both open and let water pour through, giving nice thoughts from the mist, or I can close them and splatter stuff, then let the chunks drop into the caverns right?

Well, my first try after getting the waterfall additions done (note that I originally had the bottom bridge set up as an atomsmasher, so it is linked to the same lever as the hatch) had uh... unexpectedly amazing results.

The room after dropping all the crundles, something like 30 of them:

Naturally it's a mess.

The fall was long enough that chunks actually made it a couple levels up:

So I'm like "ok, I'll drop the trolls/reachers/rutherers/possibly-elk-birds-if-they-don't-fly later, time to clean up", and I have them pull the hatch lever.

The results were... unexpectedly fantastic.

Yes, a volcano of bodyparts and gore, erupting upwards through multiple levels of living area, is not what I intended, or expected, but I will chalk it up as "happy accident", though it did injure a couple of dwarves when I was trying to figure out what happened and closed the hatch again:

The two flashing dorfs to the right were clunked by corpseparts >.>, but they calmed down once I got the mist going again:

"Suffered injuries recently. Was comforted by a lovely waterfall recently."
