Share your Horrible/Amazing megabeast stories
« on: December 08, 2014, 05:09:11 pm »

I just had a megabeast come after me from the depth that was described as an enormous feathered rabbit, beware its deadly vapors. I figured it would end like the others who came before it, as a mass of biscuits and trinkets to sell to the elves.

It turned out the deadly vapors were far from a joke. The thing blasted out clouds of Sarin. Literally nerve gas. Anything that got near it was instantly paralyzed by complete nerve death and then suffocated if the beast didn't stomp/bite/kick it into red pulp first. All I can say is thank Armok for crossbows, but I still lost three full squads before it went down, and that's from a fort with a population of 75.

Less than a month later, I was attacked by a giant three eyed crab with deadly blood. It somehow got one of my dwarve's water skins and commenced to use the thing as a weapon, crushing the skulls of five new draftees, though their steel helmets, before one of the few surviving veterans hacked off enough of its lets to get it to fall down. He got covered in blood doing it, and now he won't wake up. Ever. He's been asleep for almost a year, no other injuries at all, along with everyone else exposed to in the process of cleanup and recovery of the wounded.

I could take the cowards way out and wall off the caverns, but I think Armok wants me to keep the doors open. I shall vanquish the depths or die to the last dwarf trying; two children just came of age and took up their parents armor to carry on the fight.

My whole world is a plague of were giraffes, and my fortresses only add to their number.

On my last fortress, there was a flying megabeast with fire breath.
The entire fucking forest above my fortress burned, the military was slaughtered, and everyone who wasn't killed went insane.
Joy!

during my last dwarven fortress at masterwork there was this spider made of iron, also it could launch webs.
out of 140 dwarfs only 20 remained isolated around the fortress, mainly in what passed as sewers and in some isolated deep tunnels.
had to block so many tunnels to stall it long enough to isolate the survivors from this hell spawn.
somehow it also had wings.there was no way to stop this thing without collapsing a part of the fortress to isolate it.
later it went after the human merchants and slaughtered em without mercy.

cant even build coffins or slab em to prevent ghost outbreak.
also there is some idiotic automaton and a gnome scorching the surface every year.
burning the bodies of the dead.
the whole surface and fortress proper filled with mutilated rotten corpses ,miasma all around and badly wounded maimed dwarfs and pets.
too much FUN.

A cyclops shows up, I'm excited, order the civvies downstairs, station the military to greet it... then it turns and makes a beeline for the bait-dog and cage traps I set up so I could trap the stupid goat and eagle corpses pestering me.

Now... he joins the vomit and blood decorating the main bedroom.

I had a fort once where I set up a forgotten beast - a fire-breathing dinosaur of some kind - in a two-part chamber. Both sides of the chamber had bridge and/or hatch drops from above for prisoners and lame migrants. The two were separated by bridges. No one ever survived long enough to get to melee combat.

I didn't use webbed cages, either, or unconsciousness...I lured the thing up into its temple-like chamber.

Pretty sure the thing also doubled as a doomsday fort-ender, but idk if I ever used it. I always feel guilty about any dwarfkilling unless they're tantruming, berserk, or fell - or if the fort can only be salvaged by killing all but the children (those kids are resilient!)

And I've NEVER had a megabeast. A few semis, but never a full mega. Quite annoying, especially since on some worlds I drastically up their number and embark with short-ish history.

I had an incident where three forgotten beasts who had been sealed in the caverns invaded my fort at the same time and killed off almost the entire, completely unprepared population of around 50.  They then got sidetracked in a dormitory.  While they were there, wasting time knocking over all the beds, my only adult survivor, a mother with her infant child who was practically immune to tragedy, was able to construct a wall in the corridor leading to the bedroom, sealing them all in.  She was able to keep the fort running alone until migrants showed up.  Sadly the fortress collapsed due to ghost and miasma problems within a few months.

Beware the z-diagonals.

I had a flying fire breather sneak into my fortress from the caverns.
After roasting everything in the central stairwell, he made his way up to the underground farms/pastures and torched everything there.
Then to the skies he went, randomly napalming whatever caught his fancy.
The map was zoomed all the way out at this point, as I watched the world burn. The new trees burn beautifully.
As the ring of destruction had almost reached the edge of the map:
"A vile force of darkness has arrived!"
Now, I would have been content to learn from my mistakes and move on to greener pastures, but about 30 seconds after I closed the siege message, the game suddenly crashed. Upon reboot, my fortress was unsinged.
I'm choosing to believe one of my dorfs is clairvoyant.

Avuz: *waking up in a cold sweat* GOBLIN INVADERS!
UristMcMayor: Yes, yes. We know, and we're more than prepared.
Avuz: ....but it's so much worse than that.

Wow. I wonder if the goblins would have burned to death if it hadn't crashed. Or choked on the smoke.

I made a note to not activate the magma floodextreme lawnmower systems around winter because I prefer the goblins to face the meatgrinder of my military, no matter how amusing it would be for them to zone into the map just before a tidal wave of magma reaches the edge... the last migrant wave I had arrive during one of my most extreme groundskeeping experiments just kinda stood there at the edge of the map looking out over a lake of magma as a wave of even more magma rushed over the tops of what I thought were floodproof walls.

I've got two recent ones from different forts:

1. I had a giant arrive directly after Urist McMilitary got elected mayor. When I said "quad [a] [k]ill this giant" the entire fort went out to defend their beloved mayor, I've got no idea why. The giant was mobbed by over 100 dwarves, everyone in the fort, soldiers, noncombatants and children. He threw the dwarves across the map, repeatedly, and also tore their clothing off, throwing showers of socks and trousers all over the map. The more he threw, the more the dwarves would crawl brokenly back to pile on the giant again. The military itself slowly sliced and mashed his feet to paste, but no one could reach the head. I just have this mental image of a giant covered with 100 dwarves, all climbing desperately, swarming all over him, while he tore the dwarves from his body and limped ever onward...
Eventually, next to a dwarf-made cliff, he died, and a rather burly dwarf with one broken arm dragged him doggedly to the corpse stockpile before reporting to the hospital, where there were a huge number of falling injuries. The doctor had been a casualty, so I trained a new one, and he was excellent long before he was done.

2. Before I was ready with a good military, a forgotten beast appeared in the caverns. I temporarily walled them off, got someone making weapons from the ore from the staircase, and before I could send the newly armed military out... Another forgotten beast arrived. This one was fire breathing. It burned everything in there. Mushroom trees burned in the water they were standing in, the water boiled and turned to steam. Various cavern inhabitants, including my first plump helmet men (It's such a pity! I really wanted to farm them!), ran and burned (and, I presume, screamed). The first forgotten beast was killed in the inferno, the second soon died from the totally out of control fires. The fps dropped to unusable. The levels of the cavern was totally fire and smoke. It was glorious.

The first and most evil forgotten beast that I have encountered was Midil, a fire-breathing, massive one-eyed cardinal (= bird...). My first successful fortress, and my first breach into the cave was followed by critical errors and underestimating the monsters...

A part from my old (034. version) fortress Zasrimad's, "Crystaltactics'", log:

"- I have been called to the newly found cave. Miners have found blowdarts, shields and other equipments made from wood from the cave - there also seemed to be lot of corpses around, humanoids that look like ants. Small pack of scaled monsters with large claws and horns has been seen on the slopes of underground cave - miners call them "crundles".

- 1st Malachite, Mid-Summer. The 56th level has been secured and woodworkers have been sent in. Up on the surface new bird creatures have been spotted: white stork men, long legged humanoids with the head and wings of a stork. Hopefully not as annoying as those kea-humanoids.

- 21st Limestone, Early Autumn. Large sections of cavern has been secured and felling of trees is almost done. There should be enough space for trees to grow but future shows how much more cavern needs to be captured.

- 24th Limestone. Digging deeper from 56. level started. So far nothing but worthless gems. We'll try to find bituminous coal, but miners said it's usually found in sedimentary stone layers where hematite is found. That's why it was suggested that we start test mining from 6. to 8. level nearer the surface.

- 26th Limestone. Echoes of Forgotten Beast Midil were heard in the deepest cave of 56th level: a winged, one-eyed beast that breathes fire announced its arrival. This is bad because it can fly over the cliff.

- More monsters sighted in the cave: long tailed creatures called rutherers. Luckily path to that part of the cave has been secured by removing ramps.

- 4th Sandstone. Flying monster hasn't been seen in the area for a week so bravest woodcutters have entered the cave in order to collect all trees: steel industry needs more coal. Many haulers have followed their lead.

- On 9th Sandstone Midil The Forgotten Beast appeared suddenly and attacked woodcutters and wood haulers; a massacre!

A huge section of the cavern was in flames as the beast hurled balls of fire one after another. Marksdwarf Kogansárek attacked the beast, hitting it once to right lower leg. War dog that was guarding the entrance burned to death, as did soldier Leklokum and marksdwarves Rakaslór and Zasmómgoz. Smoke filled the tunnel and cave when we escaped; guards Shemsedil and Såkzulfesh, marksdwarf Kogansárek, mason Zimkonos and miner Dallithrith were missing after doors were locked. It wont stop the beast but mason blocked the entrance to the inner fortress in time.

One war dog charged the beast after all others fled, inflicting several minor injuries before burning to a crisp.

- 19th Sandstone - four marksdwarf squads and one infantry squad has been sent to deal with the wounded beast. Marksdwarves charged the beast, firing it with crossbows and also engaging into melee fight after the infantry squad. A strike to beast's lungs spilled boiling blood all over the beast, but also over nearby dwarves. Marksdwarves Atírnikuz and Lasgantobul burned to death. Bimegdoth, militia captain of the Mansions of Light, perished to his wounds. Other dwarves received horrible injuries while fighting the beast - fire burned the head of Rakustkesh, the militia captain of the 5th marksdwarf squad.

When day turned to new the beast was dead; finishing blow was given by the famous marksdwarf Òdadónul Zocukoddom Deler. Bodies of five missing dwarves were never found, only a few tools they had dropped while escaping. Their tombs will stay empty so memorials were build for them."

It's also featured in this animation my bro made, starting from 5 mins:

Steel ptetrosaur (that's a flyer!) with deadly dust that made dwarves almost instantly explode into gore. There were no survivors.
