So, after playing for some time, I came up with something odd. I know this is a fantasy game, but what if, somehow, it really takes place in some ruined future? Maybe some odd experiment warped creatures into the world, society falls apart, rebuilt as medieval era world. Maybe some being attacked the human race, and put some of his creatures to walk this earth? Perhaps the being IS Armok? I know its an odd idea, but I was reading "The Tripods" trilogy, where a reptilian alien race, using machines called Tripods, enslave most of humanity by capping them, and technology falls into an old time, which is described a lot like Dwarf Fort's universe (Minus creatures) and it gave me this post-apocalypse thought. However of course people sometimes do make up their own back-story for it all, I know aliens reverting the human race to the Middle Ages is a little far-fetched. I also know this is a fantasy game, with some randomly generated worlds, so really the worlds make most of the back-story. Now I have an odd urge to mod in laserguns and rename "roast" to "hot pocket" seeya.

In the beginning, there was the player. And player said Lo, create a world based on these RAWs, so that I may people them to alleviate my boredom. And after 4 hours of IRL calculations it was so. Then the player spoke: Lo, give me seven dwarves, so that I might carve out a mighty fortress and laugh at their demise. And after 15 minutes of in-game calendar fuckery it was so.

^This is the only explanation for DF that we're ever likely to get.

IIRC, also the books of the Shannara cicle are set in a reeeeeally far future, where human race has fallen due to an atomic war, and the twisted results are things like dwarves and trolls. But not elves. They were ugly tree-huggers even before.
