They will sometimes shamble in, sometime rush, and sometime ignore anything they cant see.

Id give them some time, and then send out a 'sacrificial lamb' to see if I couldn't excite them into coming in.  And Id also consider a greeting squad or spamming cage traps while I could.

Is the necromancer still there?  His presence, the siege status, and how the undead were brought around count.

I remember one fort in which a chicken head was reanimated by husking and we spent the rest of the game ignoring it, because it was so slow and unresponsive (and still indestructible).

Having slaughtered a few chooks in my time, usually it's the body of the bird which gives an interpretive dance post-mortem, instead of the head...  :D

When they leave, they will sometimes 'designate' a portion of their zombies (and any newly created zombies) to remain on site as vigils.  They will no longer be programmed the attack you specifically, rather just hang out.

Gotta take it to them or bait them in.  Try using burrows and traffic orders to restrict the movement of civilians topside and keep the military away from the topside.  Since the military dont have to follow burrows they will sometimes go to get a piece of equipment alone. Can end poorly.

So yea, if you think your boys can take them go get them.  The more dwarves you have and the better equipped they are the better.

Pasture kittens in small pen/pasture zones. Does not require sending dwarves out.  Leads em in like breadcrumbs.

Don't forget to equip your soldiers with hammers or maces before sending them to fight zombos, I'm pretty sure the undead keep fighting until they are pulped...

You could also trap one or two and build a shooting range to train crossbow dwarves, since the undead almost never die from bolts...

Pulping includes ripping to shreds or exploding into mess.  Any of them injuries that disable a body part will count.  Swords are less effective than maces because of how these 'disabling injuries' are caused.

Im completely recounting what I read by Da Vinci, but it would appear that the cutting, bruising, or denting of all layers of a body part will cause pulping.  The requirements are rather extreme to prevent every punch from incaping people.  Blunt weapons just do that better.

also with swords come loped off body parts, which may reanimate if the conditions merit.
