Items never get smelted
« on: December 07, 2014, 11:58:22 am »

I have marked a set of iron armor to be melted a long time ago, after I started making steel armor instead of iron. But I just noticed that after probably 5 ingame years, none of the items I have ever marked for smelting have been smelted, despite there always being at least 1 free smelter. Am I doing anything wrong or is this just another bug?

It's not like dumping, you have to use the "melt metal items" at the top of the smelter job list.

I thought that just melted the nearest item, which I thought was rather useless anyway because of the near-impossibility of controlling which items to smelt. And selecting an item to melt would create that job but it actually controlled the item to melt.

But thanks for the answer, I will try that.

When a dwarf goes to the smelter for the job "Melt metal items" they look for a metal item labelled as "Melt".  Dwarves will not melt just any old fluff!

On this topic:
Does designating an item for melting also mark it as forbidden or something for regular use?
E.g. if I mark tons of armor for melting in the stocks-screen could there still be a soldier picking it up to wear it before it gets melted?

Yes.
Yes.
Melting designated items may not be used, just like forbidden ones. well, there is still the issue with miners never dropping their pickaxes, even if it gets designated for dumping, but other than that they will always drop melt designated items.

As far as I know, marked items will still be brought to stockpiles and bins.

Alright. Thanks.

Followup question: Does designating a worn item for melting trigger a soldier to drop and replace it?
Or would I have to do this manually by messing around with the equipment-screen?

If they already have it equipped I don't think they will drop it just because it gets marked to melt, but I could also be completely wrong.

Assuming you don't have that specific item chosen in the uniform, they should replace it if you make a better item/match for whatever the uniform requires, then freeing it up for melting.

I don't think metal stuff actually gets worn, because the only way something gets worn out is by natural wearing, which doesn't happen to metal stuff AFAIK, and fire. Now, most metal things can't be set on fire.

Metal doesn't get worn unless you put them in refuse stockpiles (even though it must take an eternity) or you are in a sewer in adventure mode.

I don't know, I have noticed my dwarves' metal armor getting worn rather quickly after battles.

Metal items do not, except rare circumstances, wear out. Thats not the question, hes asking about melting an item someone is wearing. English, isn't it fun? Specifically, we're confusing 1 and 4.

I don't know why you had to be so demeaning about it. I'm aware of what he is asking, that doesn't mean I didn't have a comment or question of my own.

I don't think any of us needed a definition for wear.
