guys how on earth do you get all this magma where you want it and are able to shuffle it around effectively?

I am going to need like a 50 zlevel (at the least) pumpstack to get magma up to my fort's forges and such. Or is this all on volcano embarks?

Right but that's like a massive undertaking. I am calculating for it in my succession fort, and I'm not sure it would be worth the iron pieces to pump stuff up to the forges, because by that time I will not have altogether that much iron left.

It just seems excessively difficult and complex. Though I am dying for an excuse to do it. :?.

It is excessive; but that's the price to pay for magma topside.  Unless you do a volcano.  And any excuse is supposed to be good enough to make an over-complicated contraption that you don't understand that handles dangerous super-heated materials.  Its the dwarven way  (just not mine).

If you only need small quantities of magma at a time you can use a minecart loader. Just remember that magma "evaporates" like water, so a single automated loader isn't appropriate for filling a chamber.

I'm usually taking the lazy route:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then again, you often don't have trees or water readily available on volcanoes so there is that.

All those dogs... and are those coffins in their own booths? I usually just pile mine into a big room...

This design might help you filter the goblinite from the cloth-based slag:

This design isn't my own, but alas the picture seems to come without attribution on that site.

I build a little necropolis. The coffins are unused except for one but you never know...
I think my dwarfs have done so well that they deserve a little extra treatment in case of an emergency. If I get really bored I'll make a proper necropolis with a 3x3 tomb for every dwarf.

That picture of the goblin X-mas gifts filter system is beautiful and terrifying at the same time! =o

For a moment I thought you meant that foreigners were coming on to your map and melting... I have an interesting mind.

How much do you guys mess with the raws? I assume you could actually do that you set elf bones to melt at room temperature or something...

Hell, one of the world-gens from the cookbook thread, I think it might have been vjek, but not sure, was their attempt to make a steam river or something.

On embark a 20+ tile wide river flashes into steam, and you have to select the other biome to make sure the wagon doesn't land in the part of the map where stuff just boils instantly.

I was surprised that I was able to get started on an aquifer pierce without any deaths immediately, though a couple cats threw themselves into the steaming brook near the wagon... and then elephants murdered everyone.
