Its well known that taking stray metal bolts from your practice range or outside and melting them down one at a time is the bet way to make more metal.

Unless Toady took that away.

Unless you are using a magma smelter and lots of them, melting single bolts needs more time and coal.

And even with a magma smelter, it will use a _lot_ of time. Making and melting chain leggings gives you a profit of 1/2 bar per melting job, melting down bolts ~1/16.

Ah guys, it's easy. You just capture them in traps, then throw them in magma.
But then we don't get dwarf ingots of goblin wafers...

It is all in the wiki.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Melt_item
From this it appears that material size 3 weapons have a 90% return (.9 ingots) and mat size 4 weapons have a 120% return (1.2 ingots), so about 30% or .3 ingot return per material size if my guess is accurate...

Oh I'm sure you can get some grease at least! Get them in the mist maybe... the *magma mist* that is.

Speaking of magma mist, how would I go about making a trap with it?

I was thinking about a C-shaped path with magma in the middle:

WWWWWWWWWWWWW
W+++++++++++++++ <- outside
W+MMMMMMMMMMMMM
W+++++++++++++++ -> Fort
WWWWWWWWWWWWW

If I drop stones/blocks through hatches from 3-4 z-levels over the magma that should create some nice mist, right?
What's the best way to drop blocks without endangering my dwarfs?

???  what does anyone in DF have but time?  If you have the time to duplicate metal than you likely have time to stockpile bolts by a magma forge and go to town.  doesnt take all that long, imo .

Either way.  Im suggesting something Ive actually done before.  Any fort with hunters or a crossbow  squad sjould be capable of it as a side product of fort defense.

So the important point is getting metal out of goblin/elf/etc bodies. Years ago I modded in "SpleenSteel" which required a spleen to smelt. Of course, ethics was tweaked to allow butchery of sentients. I don't think I ever got round to testing it out though.

wouldn't your typical mist generator work?

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=34407.0

Just replace water with magma, and make sure there is an on/off switch for the gear assy!  The screwpumps themselves would make it delightfully attractive to building destroyers, no?

Downside: needs magama-safe mechanisms.

If I read the wiki correctly magma mist forms a bit differently than water mist, and the standard mist generator wouldn't work.

Magma mist definitely kills cleanly but tends to leave behind worthless XXclothesXX that have to be taken care of. I'm currently building a combined magma mist trap and garbage disposal where the current dump contents get dropped into magma when a goblin walks by. I'll just have to make sure that plenty of heavy stuff like bodies and boulders get thrown away.

I think those magma pump solutions where the goblin is momentarily bathed in a cube of magma would also burn clothes away cleanly, leaving only metal items. The magma "mist generator" would work in this sense, or one could build a system where magma gets pumped from a reservoir and dropped through a grate back to reservoir.

Aww, getting rid of the clutter was half the appeal the idea had to me. Thanks for the ideas anyway.

So a quick bath would take care of the clothes but leave the weapons and armor for smelting? That could be arranged, too. =D

PS: I read somewhere that atom-smashing is great for the FPS because it permanently removes items from memory. Does this work for burning stuff in magma? My current fort is doing pretty well FPS-wise and I would like to keep it that way as long as possible.

So long as the magma bath isn't too quick. Oh wait, that super soldier program required an immediate dousing in water after the flash-magma treatment. Never mind, carry on.

Hope you get the timing down or your supersoldiers will be hard as rock obsidian.

nah, magma mist isn't "mist, but with magma". you create magma mist (it's basically magma droplets) when stuff falls into magma or minecarts skip over magma.

guys how on earth do you get all this magma where you want it and are able to shuffle it around effectively?

I am going to need like a 50 zlevel (at the least) pumpstack to get magma up to my fort's forges and such. Or is this all on volcano embarks?
