Melting foreigners
« on: December 06, 2014, 11:02:55 pm »

Has anyone done research on the melt output for foreign weapons? I've modded so my dorfs can forge whips, long swords, etc and I want to know what's best for training my smiths.

Aren't melting returns simply a function of "material size"? Not much research needed for that. Any way, all weapons should give the same amount of weaponsmithing experience, so all are equally good for the smiths.

If you mean training while breaking even or even gaining metal, more material size equals better melt returns for non-adamantine weapons. You can smith/melt with a profit using battleaxes or picks. Going by the raws, two-handed swords, halberds, mauls and great axes should be even more profitable, but i wouldn't overdo it. That kind of stuff is scummy and causes beard cancer.

To be honest, I thought this was something completely different from the title.

It is all in the wiki.

No, it isn't. PillarsOfSalt is asking about the melting returns on foreign weapons, weapons that dwarves normally cannot make (but his can because of modding). That page only has values for things unmodded dwarven civilizations can make.
To be honest, I thought this was something completely different from the title.
I too am disappointed by the extremely mundane nature of this thread. It is a good question though. Surely with all the tons upon tons of goblinite processed by players of the years, someone would have detailed the melting returns on these things.

I, too, was profoundly disappointed by the actual subject of this thread.

I already answered the question: look at the raws, item_weapon.txt. The relevant entry is "material_size"; when melting, you get 3/10 of a bar per size, and when smithing, cost is 1/3 material size in bars, rounded down, at least one.

Items with material size 5 cost one bar (5/3 rounded down) to make and return 1,5. There are several foreign weapons with that material size, but you can look them up yourself :P

Ah guys, it's easy. You just capture them in traps, then throw them in magma.

But then we don't get dwarf ingots of goblin wafers...

It is all in the wiki.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Melt_item
From this it appears that material size 3 weapons have a 90% return (.9 ingots) and mat size 4 weapons have a 120% return (1.2 ingots), so about 30% or .3 ingot return per material size if my guess is accurate...
