Subterranean - Magitek horror GMed RPG [6/8]

SUBTERRANEAN

Somewhere out in the void of space, way beyond the bubble that is our observable universe, there lie a planet with the name of Kryl.

The year is 1477. Breakthroughs in alchemy had led to rapid advancement in the development of increasingly sophisticated magic, as well as a new era of enlightenment. However, the ability for certain cults to finally operate without secrecy had resulted in a surge in magical crimes against humanity.

But the situation in the Greatgreen forest in the Kingdom of Ellera was no cult.

Inhabitants of the Greatgreen village had been disappearing at nights, and there had been sightings of unique flesh golems built out of woodland creatures and humans which were too numerous to disbelieve. Academic interest from the University of Syvel and the pressure to uncover the culprits behind these bogeys had persuaded the King to send soldiers and mercenaries to aid the researchers in studying these creatures.

The last message that the royal palace received from the commander was two weeks ago. It described the amount of research completed by the scholars which had previously been relayed to the University itself for compilation. After several skirmishes with the strangely organized flesh golems, they pinpointed the creatures to a single cave. They set up camp there.

Then they vanished.

You are a group of mercenaries who had been sent to perform preliminary investigations before the main army arrives.

This is an RPG. It will be pretty light on rules, and so you can sort of interpret this as almost free-form, except that I roll dices and occasionally arbitrarily decide how things should go. I will try to be fair, but this is still horror.

You will have some liberties with your character. 'Magic' in this game is precise work, and are not spells. There are no such things as magicians. Only scientists. Of course, this doesn't stop your characters from carrying magical devices, so long as they aren't game-breaking.

This will be go relatively quick, so I'm only accepting 8 randomly chosen characters, sorry. The rest may get to influence the game through PM to me though.

Name: Alicia Stonebreaker
Description: A tall, powerfully built woman.  She wears tight leather armour and a pair of metal gauntlets with bracers that extend to the elbow. A wide brimmed leather hat covers her long black hair and dark brown eyes. Scars along her arms, legs, and back, beneath the armour, reveal the surgery she had to increase her strength to superhuman levels.
Occupation: General face-puncher, maintenance woman
Skills: Face punchin', basic maintenance of magical systems.
Inventory:The Gloves of Vulcan: two metal gauntlets and bracers engraved with hundreds of arcane symbols, with cables leading to a small device carried on the small of her back, below her backpack. The device powers the Gloves, which can convert energy (such as heat) into  thermal energy (i.e. they can hit damn hot. Obviously, this means she can pick up very hot things too, as long as they only touch the gauntlets - the heat is just converted to energy, which is stored in the device on her back. She's well versed in using them to defend herself.
In effect, she can heat the gloves, cool the gloves, or project a burst of fire from them, though that takes a large amount of energy from them.

Maintenance kit: A set of small tools, pre-made crystal matrixes, and various bits and bobs for maintaining the Gloves of Vulcan.

The five of you were riding on horseback towards the Greatgreen village, led by one wizened old man on his mule. True to the forest's name, the greyish brown dirt gave way to green mosses and gigantic trees, their building-high roots reminding one of some sort of land krakens frozen in wooden form. Apart from the whistling tune of the wind through the canopies, there are no sound of any living beings apart from your party of six and the two falcons perched on Joe's shoulders.

Elias of Greatgreen unscrewed the cap of his drinking flask and gulped some water, his eyes darting around the silent forest. He pulled the mule to a halt. "Didja hear that?" he asked quizzically. You can hear the horses and the sound of your companions.

The old man raised his hand, signalling you to stop your horses.

"Can't say I did", Jariko replied, silently questioning the sanity of their guide.

Alicia pulled her horse to a stop, glaring round the trees from under her hat before she shook her head.

Still skeptical, Jariko raises his staff, invoking the spell bound to it, and attempts to shed some light in the trees.

Jacques carefully slowed his horse to a stop and looked at the old guy with irritation in his eyes.
