Huge, sudden FPS drop
« on: December 06, 2014, 12:39:32 am »

I hope this is the right place for this, I didn't really see a tech support section. I've got a really nice computer, so I've been able to play DF without any problems, up until today. I was playing just fine, when all the sudden my FPS dropped from 100ish to 11. I've used the LAA on it, and it's still stuck at 11. I've got processor priority at real time, still 11. The 11 is pretty consistent too, once it drops down to it, it doesn't get higher or lower (except for when I pause then it goes back to 100 only to drop back to 11 at resume). Is there something I can do to get it back up? Or have I just finally got my first FPS death? I have opened up more areas of cavern than usual on this play through, but not much.

Realtime is the worst setting. High is the best.

Do you get 11 FPS when your view is aboveground or inside?
I'm asking because when my view is aboveground looking at the trees and grass and all that, my FPS go down to 15, however when my view is deeper underground my FPS go back up to 40.

Yes, that kind of thing happens, and if someone knows why there are drastic FPS drops, they haven't been very active on the forum, as the question has been raised several time (including by me). It shouldn't be considered a criticism, though, as I think the forum's purpose is to answer questions.
There is a wiki page on how to improve performance (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Maximizing_framerate).

Thanks, I've switched it over to high.

I'll check some of those out!

Also, I just discovered a hunter is stuck in my cavern, he must have slipped in before I walled it off. Now he's hungry and trying to path his way out. Is it possible that the lag is due to DF trying to path an impossible path for him? If he would die would everything speed up again?

I doubt it's the hunter, but open the cavern up to let him out and then close it again (you ARE using airlock drawbridges to close the cave off, aren't you?).

Sudden fps drops are usually causes by creatures failing to path trough doors or similar stuff.
You may also have too many trees in the map, amd their leaves falling are taking a huge of the processing... Try chopping down the forests if there are leaves falling, lower end computers may slow down with those ( and even powerhouses can have a small pull too).

My FPS drop from 75 to 20-ish was caused by opening a, somewhat broken, cavern level. (a lot of non pathable areas, which caused the drop).
So.. if the drop happeend around the time you opened it up.. must be that
