I instantly thought of the runes from Masterwork Dwarf Fortress. I think that runes and poisons would be excellent implementations for generated artifact weapons

Runes and poisons are the same thing in Masterwork. Besides that, the implementation is either taken from or done first (I haven't looked at the actual implementation) by Legends of Forlorn Realms.

I appreciate your fandom for LFR, which is an amazing mod, but this isn't true.  Meph and Narhiril both developed their own versions of this idea, in collaboration with each other and with exponent, at the same time in Dec 2012.

Jesus, really? Masterwork existed back then? I have the weirdest goddamn mental block when it comes to some mods.

Yep, easy enough to verify if you care to poke around in the DFHack or LFR threads around that time.

Back on topic, I agree, it would be pretty awesome to have some special effects other than +hit on artifact (or poisoned/runic/etc.) weapons, and also to have special characters like Archangels wield such artifacts.  Hopefully that is on Toady's development radar!

It would be sort of interesting if they made something other than slabs. Personally though, I'd rather see gods crafting any kind of object, rather than just weapons. It could fill in a lot of plotholes in the production chain and possibly provide a more colorful questing experience if some god's twisted metal bucket becomes a highly sought after relic that everyone wants.

If your animals aren't expendable, you could always station a dwarf or two out there?

procedes to kill people using a holy bucket...

back on topic, i like the idea of god made artifact, even if they aren't weapons to speak. it could be mixed with a proper religious system in the simulation, where each artifact becomes an object of worship by the people aligned with that deity. and speaking about it, how about adding demonic weapons too?, maybe producing a bad mood or syndrome to the wearer, but being quite powerfull. it would give more flavor.

Just thought I'd mention that the demons are actually servants of the gods.  A demon makes a contract with a deity of the same spheres to bring the demon into the world.  Several units of the related divine metal are also generated to equip the guardians.  And that is how Vaults are born!  The demon then goes on to found a goblin civilization.  Just pointing out that demonic artifacts wouldn't be that much different than divine ones... if demons even have that power.
