Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen!

I am a regular inhabitant of the lower forums who has recently decided to start playing Dwarf fortress again!

The question is, what should I know about the new version in order to avoid too much !FUN!!?

Goblins now seem to know no bounds... I'm getting Goblin sieges the first autumn all the time now. This also means caravans aren't reliable before first siege. So bring an anvil, and prepare for siege/war ASAP.

Combat is different.  Adventure mode is better for that kind of detail.
Penises can be mangled, and its a profession.  Gelding
fruit and trees can be harvested
moar plants
goblins dont come on their time-laspe escalation, now following vaguely 'realistic' factors, like distance and stuff
zombies are harder than husks
sponges are not invincible, because pulping happens
dwarves have personalities and 'feel' emotions towards items rather than the old 'I am sad it rained'.  Now its 'This chair is interesting'.
More distinct kinds of hauling.
No more curious structures underground, just the bottom.
Demons rule over goblins with almost 100% accuracy.
Wolrdgen continues as you play, kind of slowing the world down as it gets older.

... or don't show up at all.  I've had my first siege after several years, and it consisted of 11 goblins... so it varies.  I can't really give you useful info because I've only played .40 , not .34 .

I'm amazed that there was mention of gelding, an almost completely useless edition, but you didn't menton spore breeding was removed, an incredibly significant change that pretty much completely nullifies the already nearly nonexistent uses for gelding.

Also some changes to justice and hospitals so they are actually useful now...

Oh and climbing, jumping, and terror are now things you have to keep in mind when setting up defenses (can't just build a 1 z level wall and be invincible forever now), and cave adaptation is now something you should actually pay attention to...

yea cave adaptation happens fast and is brutal. Every fort I've had lately has been covered in vomit from nauseous dwarves. I have to win fights by numbers a lot of times because my dwarves are so disabled topside.

Also, it just seems like the spellcheck for this forum should be modified so dwarves is a part of the vocabulary. :?.

I always like to toss in a friendly tip: on forested embarks don't carve into any upper-most layer of the earth; the branches that collapse/fall off of trees now will punch holes through any floor tile that's hollow underneath :|
