No Vampires so far
« on: December 04, 2014, 06:18:19 am »

Hello Community

I really want to do some dwarven CSI-Investigations, but I seem never to get any vampires.
I thought that I need a specific amount of Dwarfs to "activate" them, but then i've read, that even one of your first Dwarfs can be a Vampire. Since I'm still learning and how to play Dwarf Fortress (respectively tweaking my playstile), I usually play without Invaders. Could that be the reason for the lack of vampires?

//: Is it possible, that the Vampires lived in my fort, but I just never noticed them?

I play with invaders turned on and play very often, however I too never have noticed any vampires.
I think it is just very rare for them to exist in a standard world.

Vampires are pretty uncommon. I've been playing DF for ages, and I think I've seen one, probably because I tend to play small forts. Your best option is probably to attract a ton of migrants by exporting a lot of goods and building a high-value fort. The odds of one of your migrants being a vampire should increase.

It is possible that you have vampires, but have yet to notice it.

I received my first vampire.. not too sure.. in the first - to - third migrant wave, but he didn't drain anyone's blood that fast.
In the last wave I got a new one (who drained a legendary planter from the get-go).

180 dwarves : 2 vampires.

It's become less likely to get one, I think.

Since it's become more beneficial fps-wise to gen small worlds with short history, there's fewer dwarves who have had enough time to piss off the Gods.  It's frustrating, I know; I really liked the vampire feature, and afaik there isn't any way to encourage the world to gen them more frequently.

Except through advanced worldgen where you set set their numbers as high as you please.  Still have to wait for them to profane the churches, however.  which mean they have to be built first.

The advanced worldgen vampire numbers does not affect the number of vampires genned.  You can set it to be as high as you want, but it essentially functions as a 1/0 switch.

I used to have at least one in every fort. Now I haven't seen one since the last two updates.

How old should the world have to be before you'd expect to see vampires?  I'm playing a fortress with a population of almost 250 valued at more than 2 million dorfbucks and I haven't seen a single vampire.  However, the year is only 132.

I'd really like to get one so that I can seal it in a time capsule at the top of a mountain or something and ensure my fortress can't crumble due to stressed-out tantrum-spiraling dwarves.

I'm glad all the DF players are not living in one district. It'd be the most dangerous district for the whole world.
Actually, it'd be the most dangerous district in hundreds of thousands of worlds, starting with 'Xah Rabin' The Dimension of Omen.

The only things I can imagine being required are shrines/churches to a god and somebody to profane them.

Given that the world is now active, perhaps as your fortress ages a dwarf somewhere out there will be turned into a vampire and possibly migrate to your fortress.

I never get vampires.

This maybe because I set world gen to 300 to keep fps down.
