how in Armok's name do I pick the captain of the guard

hello

I'm completely confused. 

I noted that a rather dangerous dwarf (macelord) had been appointed captain of the guard.  This seemed like a dangerous idea, so I appointed a harmless weaver instead.  Problem solved right?

No.   I later realized that this weaver had also been appointed head of a squad (the crushing weapon squad).  This is still bad because now these brutes are fortress guards, and they have an incompetent as their captain.

Fair enough, I create a new squad, the "Justice League", with the weaver at its captain and a glazer as her helper.  These guys should be the the fortress guard.   But I can't make the posting stick!   If she's captain of the justice league, I can't select her as captain of the guard.  If I select her as captain of the guard, she's back in charge of the bruiser squad.  If I move her to the Justice League, she's back to being an ordinary captain. 

What am I doing wrong here?

Rename your squads, move all of the bruisers over to the former "justice league" squad, move all of the harmless dwarves to the guard squad.

The guard squad, once created, cannot be changed in its position on the military menu.  So you need to move dwarves around a bit.

I see... annoying, but at least a solution.   I was worried I was going to have to disband every squad!

Shoot, I've never had an actual tantrum spiral that finished off my fortress. So I've never really had much use for my "Department of Justice," save a few vampires that needed to be corrected with a hammer.

I just treat my fortress guard like another squad  :o So I assume that when my dwarfs finally snap, there will be no survivors. Martial law with the death penalty for every infraction. Sounds like it will be great amounts of !FUN!
