But... why? I find pretty useful to see at a glance where are and what are doing them. ..

Obiously, an option more is always a nice thing, so i support you idea.

I find it painful to look at (fortunately not literally).
I often have too many legendaries to care about any particular one anyway.

Why do I care where my legendary bone carver is or what he's doing?

I support this suggestion! In fact, I suggest it be taken even further: not only have the option of making legendaries not flash, but have the option of choosing who you DO want to flash yourself. Could be a menu item right next to the nickname function.

Because I don't care about my legendary bone carver. But I might very much care about my no-name, no-skill sacrificial miner who I am currently attempting to micromanage into a hole to tap a volcano. Or I might care about why my trader is not at the depot again, even if he isn't legendary anything.

I want those people to flash INSTEAD of legendaries, when I ask them to.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
