As the sun rises this morning, the four of you wake up in your homes.  It is a somewhat blustery day in high summer, with light fluffy clouds and a bright sun.  The steady wind comes off the ocean, carrying the smells of salt, fish, and seaweed, a combination that speaks deeply of contentment and satisfaction.  It's a fine day, and, perhaps, a very hopeful omen.

You can see the town is already very active, swelled by the numerous pilgrims and attendees for the ritual.  The fishing boats, always early to leave, have emptied the harbor, as, likely, have the foragers and fishers who must be already attending the traps and hunting for herring.

You can also see the stocks of food and goods for the feast and the sacrifice stacked up on the bare clifftops.  It's in stark contrast to the rationing; at least tomorrow, for once, will be a day of plenty.  You can only hope it is a celebration, and not a wake.  You cannot see the priests at work, but you are certain they must have their own preparations.  What these are, you haven't been informed.  Which raises another question..

What do you do for this, what may well be the last day of your life?

Skylark rolls in her nest (we are birds IIRC), looking out the window. Yawning, her head falls back to the pillow. Then a small spark of a though flies through her head.. and she is off, flying throuh the window and over the town, doing acrobatic moves and singing with excitment. She heads to the local temple (mead hall, capital, wherever the big dogs are) and attempts a flashy acrobatic landing.

Wake up, fly around excitedly, ready to prove myself, attempt a daredevil landing at the temple or whatever, get ready to meet the others and start the day.

Drak looked over the town.  This was his chance; his one shot to prove himself, and there was no way he was going to mess this up.  Better start smart.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Time to go have some.

As always, Khaal woke up with only a vague recollection of his surroundings.  Because he had recently found that it was getting quite difficult to remember both who he was and where he was, he had decided to focus solely on remembering who he was and trust the where to sort itself out.

Right now, for instance, he appeared to be in a hut overlooking a small village.  Could it be an enemy village?  He of course couldn't remember, but he could remember that he was an elder of a village-- perhaps his village was a rival to this one.  He could only assume that he had been tasked to infliltrate this village, subvert its leadership, and sow chaos (perhaps as part of some sort of trade-war).  It was, he felt, the most logical conclusion and certainly not another senile delusion.

Go into the enemy village, find a street corner, and begin yelling about how the elders and leaders of the village work against the interests of the common man.

It was not a fine day to die, indeed it was not, Kallo thought. He would have preferred to die on a terrible day, indeed he would!

Stalk miserably into the village after getting some food in me. Wonder what I'm supposed to do exactly, and what virtues should I choose to exemplify today.

Wake up, fly around excitedly, ready to prove myself, attempt a daredevil landing at the temple or whatever, get ready to meet the others and start the day.

You wake up, stretch your wings, and begin flying, enjoying the sun and wind and this beautiful flying weather.  As you go through some aerobatics, you attract the attention of a couple of this year's younglings, and they dare each other into competing with you.  (3 vs 11)  Unfortunately, it isn't your best day, and they manage to keep up with you.  After they get tired, as none of them has your stamina, you come in for a landing on the edge of the scriptorium, where the priests keep their written histories.  You can see one of the elder priestesses, Carina, sunning her wings on the roof.  As you land, she speaks:

"Good to see you enjoying yourself, Skylark.  Are you ready for the ritual tomorrow?"

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Time to go have some.

After waking up from your rooftop dwelling, you decide to begin the day by getting your food.  You fly down to the food stores, and the attendant gets you a couple of smallish herring, marking your name off as he does so.  You eat the first one quickly, and then settle down a bit further away.  A few others land to get their own food, and you notice them pointedly ignoring you as you work the first herring down your gullet.

Go into the enemy village, find a street corner, and begin yelling about how the elders and leaders of the village work against the interests of the common man.

You fly around for a few moments, looking for the proper place to begin your hauranging.  After a moment, you decide to land infront of a couple of the human shops.  You're almost certain your village didn't have any of the nasty creatures in it.  After a few minutes of some proper chirping and screeching, a couple of the shopkeepers come out to observe you.  Shortly, one of them begins to approach.

{Wisdom Check -> failure}

A challenge!

Stalk miserably into the village after getting some food in me. Wonder what I'm supposed to do exactly, and what virtues should I choose to exemplify today.

You fly to get your ration, and it's a small amount of none-too-fresh herring roe, and a couple of entirely inadequate freshwater clams.  There's also that good-for-nothing Drak, sitting around with a herring in his talons, blissfully unaware of the hard working birds like yourself who probably got it for him.

To distract yourself, you think about the plans for tomorrow.  All you know for certain is that the priests have came up with some kind of important god-bothering, and they needed four of the greatest birds to 'volunteer' for it.  You do have today free, at least,, and you could probably push your elevated status as one of the chosen into doing whatever you like.  Maybe you could check out the preparations for the ritual?  Or maybe you'd just like to goof off with your friends?

((Meanwhile in soviet birdrussia...)) ((I was under the impression the birds were already chosen..))

Skylark rolls over and lays on the roof, looking over the town, outstreching her wings.

"Good morning Carina, I've heard of the summoning,". Skylark gets up and walks towards Carina, "I was wondering if there was anything I could help with?"

Talk to Carina.

Trade some of the clams for something more palatable or, alternatively, more useful from one of the other villagers. Surely there has to be someone who needs food more than stuff around here. Eat the roe, though. That sounds like something I'm not entirely sick of.

Drak thought to say something, then decided against it.  A month ago, he would have said something and asked for a chance.  Not now, though; he would have his chance tomorrow.  Then they'd see he had worth and value.  Just one more day.

Ignore them back.  Finish up the meal and take to the air.  Anything going on near the ritual site?

The enemy was trying to disrupt his mission!  There was only one way to respond to this whippersnapper: a verbal put-down of such immense cleverness that its recipient would burst into tears of ashamed awe!  "Eh...?  You dare chirp back to a bird at least four times your age?  Look here whippersnapper, I am an elder of a very important village.  And I... eh... what was I... oh yes... That is to say, I feel that, eh no..."

Khaal stopped for a moment.  He was beginning to feel rather confused.  "Eh... what was I saying?"

Ask the kindly individual in front of him what exactly is going on here.

Talk to Carina.

(Yup.  You were all selected earlier.)

Carina says "Well, we've got everything pretty much ready.  What we need is for you to show up at the ritual grounds first thing tomorrow morning, and, well, it's not quite a summoning as such."

She raises her head for a moment, listening to the wind.

"Would you like a bit of a sneak peek?"

Trade some of the clams for something more palatable or, alternatively, more useful from one of the other villagers. Surely there has to be someone who needs food more than stuff around here. Eat the roe, though. That sounds like something I'm not entirely sick of.

You eat the roe.  Not bad, but pretty ordinary.

Food is short, and you think that if you wanted something, being a hero, you would only need ask someone for it.  You take your two clams, and start catching the attention of various visitors picking up rations, trying to trade them for something better.  For a few moments, you meet with little success, but eventually one of the pilgrims coming for the ritual catches your eye.  He seems to be struggling with a sizeable fish in his claws.

As he lands next to you, exhausted from the flight, you recognize him as Archer, a fisher you've met from a settlement a ways up the coast.  He also drops the relatively huge mackerel he was carrying, likely intended for the feast.

Ignore them back.  Finish up the meal and take to the air.  Anything going on near the ritual site?

You gulp the other herring down.  Sated, you leap up and fly over to the smooth rocky point where the ritual will take place.  Things seem mostly complete, with a tall wooden pole upright in the centre of a ring outlined in fresh chalk, with some small perches inside their own circles within.  You see some boxes with holly leaves, and some more chalk nearby.  Outside the circle there are a series of several larger rings, formed by logs cut down and rolled into place.  You expect these will be for seats and places.  The place is currently empty, save for a couple perched on the tip, facing the sea, enjoying the wind, and a human idling by the new shed that was put up to store the ritual gear.

{Wisdom check -> Success}

You stand there, looking up at the human, and screech out your statement.  It looks at you, questioningly, and says a few words in the human language.  It then takes its hand, and points at a tall perch in the middle of town, that you realize is for criers.

It's still more equitable to trade, though. Would be good to get some form of tool that I might be able to use. Never know when you'll need tools!

The damn dirty human was right, of course.  Khaal remembered that he had come here to say something and what better place to say it than the criers' perch?

He had no idea what he had intended to announce, but he figured he could probably make it up as he went along.

Announce some plausible-sounding news on the criers' perch.  Try to not look confused.
