Roll to Save the World. [4/4] Turn Eighteen: Wrong Number.
« on: December 02, 2014, 11:28:16 am »

What is this?

It's a fairly serious, non-minimalist RTD, with much of the setup left to the dice...  and the Happy Fun Table of Doom.

Happy Fun Table of Doom?

Yes. The thing that tells me what you are, where you are, and what horrible disaster is happening to you and your people.
The backstory is.. something.  I'll have it written after the Happy Fun Table of Doom lets me know the bones of your story.  You could be..

A caveman, trying to save your isolated tribe from alien robotic infiltrators!  A thirty-kilo predator dinosaur running from sheets of fire from the sky!  A draftee, sent into the line of battle against the evil beast-things of Kragg, with your rifle starting to look awfully inadequate.  An initiate of Zinglon the nose, in the guild-house whence the the blood plague came forth.

So.. are there stats and stuff?  How does this work?

Pretty straightforward.  Most actions, events, and combat are rolled with a d12.  Tone is to be pretty serious, it's the situations that are bizarre, so don't expect to find an effective solution for the braineater parasites without tools, patients, or even knowing that it is braineating parasites what are causing people's skulls to explode.

As for stats, and character sheets, what is required will depend on what scenario is selected, and the results that the Happy Fun Table of Doom serves up.

Current Characters:
Scenario 1

To start, I need votes on which scenario should be selected from the beginning:

1.  You are medium-sized seabirds, selected from a number of promising youngsters, for an unknown, but dreadful, purpose.  The situation is Cataclysmic, but it is Delayed.  Four slots.

2.  You are small anthropomophic lizards, from a town in semi-arid scrublands, awoken from your mid-day naps by a sudden earthquake.  The situation is Critical, and it is Ongoing.  Five slots.

3. You are a hunting party of human nomadic tribals, from a temperate plain.  It is an ordinary spring day.  The situation is Extreme, and it is Imminent.  Four slots.

I vote for this. Medium-sized seabirds are awesome.

I'm interested in either 1 or 3.  If I had to pick, 1 for originality.

Looks like the birds have it.  Very well, then..

Thousands of years ago, it is said that this land was very different.  The people were split into many dozens of tribes, mages bringing peace to friends and woe to enemies, and the leadership of the gods to direct our actions through times of chaos and bewilderment.  It is said that we lived from the mouths of the icy rivers to the north, to the swamps deep in the south, to the lakes in the mountains far, far to the east.

And then things changed.

Hundreds of years ago, the mages had no more mighty powers, and the priestly caste could no more bring the words of the gods to light our path.  The safe havens protected from the elements by the spells of the mages were gone, and we had no leadership through the cold seasons and the dry seasons, telling us where to move and when to move.  Fighting, while always present, threatened to consume us in pointless combat over the few remaining havens where we could live year round.

But that did not last.  One, or several, as it is sometimes told, showed us a better way.  He went from place to place, visiting many, talking to the high and the low, spreading the philosophy of unity, and questioning, making it plain that where one may fail alone, many may succeed together, and that only by spreading our knowledge and discoveries could we manage to survive together.  It was painful, and it was difficult, and some did not listen, but in the end we made peace, we learned to survive without the spells of the great, and without the orders from the gods.  Once again, we lived from the ice rivers to the north, to the marshes of the south, and to the high mountain lakes far to the east.  We even made peace with the hunters from across the ocean, and for long years have we traded with them and exchanged goods and ideas.  Some of us now live over the ocean, as some of them live in our settlements here.

And then things changed.

Now, we do not live across the width and breadth of this land.  We are hunted by the swift runners, with their bows, that come in innumerable numbers across the plain, ever seeking out us in their inexhaustable drive for domination.  We now live only along a few places near the ocean, and around the inland brine sea, where we have existed since time immesurable.  No longer do the traders arrive each year, with their fine goods and new weapons, and no longer do we harvest the silks and cloths from the plantations in the mountains, with which we build our nets and farm our food.

I'm afraid, we are doomed.. unless we find a new way.  All of you are young, and are among our best.  In two nights, we will have a great summoning, the likes of which has not been done in centuries, where the whole weight of our people will attempt to reach our gods, and hopefully provide us with some direction in the solving of this crisis.  We do not know if it will work, but we must seek out a new way, or else face destruction.

What I need from you in a sheet is pretty straightforward.

1.  Your name.

2. Why you are chosen.

The only restrictions is that you can't have any magic, nor superpowers.  If you did have such, you would be too important to waste on such a deperate hope... contacting the gods is dangerous, and many have died in the attempt.

Name:  Drak Flyson
Why were you chosen:  Drak's grandfather was a well respected elder in the community, who was seen as a great thinker and contributor.  Four of his five sons are also highly respected hunters and guardians.

The fifth son is Elak, Drak's father.  He is lazy, unhelpful, rude, and does not contribute to the community at all.  Drak, Elak's only child, has lived under this stigma his whole life.  He has always strived to prove his worth, but no one seems willing to give him a chance.  Only Drak's grandfather saw any potential worth in him.

His grandfather's dying wish was for Drak to be given an opportunity to prove himself.  Out of respect for his wisodm, Drak was chosen for the task before him.

Wait, we're civilized seabirds? What a bummer. I thought we'd be, like, regular giant petrels or something. Are we anthropomorphic, too?

Name: Kallo Kawtu
Why were you chosen: though his lineage is undistinguished and his parentage uncertain, Kallo has ensured his popularity among the people due to his skin diving prowess and his prosperity by occasionally retrieving a pearl or two from the seas - both are meager, naturally, but he felt like he had found a comfortable niche to occupy in society right up until the point his overly proud mother nominated him for heroic duties. Feeling like he would lose far too much face if he refused, Kallo went along with it, knowing full well he was likely to meet a grisly end. Then again, as a skin diver by trade, Kallo was bound to die horribly one way or another, though telling himself this has failed to make him feel any better about it thus far.

Nope, no hands.  Usually the generator spits out civilized creatures, but not always, and, well, there isn't a whole lot of you left...

You're pretty close on the giant petrel bit.  Think similar size, but with a hooked beak rather than a filter beak for shellfish and crabs, but no krill.
