Serious performance issues in 40.xx
« on: December 02, 2014, 08:41:10 am »

So, I'm just going to jump to the meat here and say that the entire line of 40.xx updates have caused serious performance problems for me. I'm not sure if it's just me or if it's a common problem because I rarely check the forums, but by the end of the first year, my fps drops to 30 as a standard, regardless of the genned world, size of embark, or dwarf population. I first noticed it very early in the update, maybe 0.3 or 0.4 when the FPS was <20 right off the bat. I figured it's the usual post-update bugs and would probably improve later, but .14 and later are still problematic.

I'm wondering if there's a common fix for the lag (assuming the lag itself is common) or if there are some hardware issues in the latest version that I'm not aware of. I've recently installed an SSD and doubled my RAM, but I'm still running DF off my HDD and forcing it to realtime on a single core.

DF is only ever going to access 2gb of RAM no matter how much you have. If you have a 64 bit OS you can get it to access 4gb using an outside program, but I'm not sure if that affects fps in smaller forts.

I've been doing fine with 2x2 embarks, even with caves open and high pops of dwarves. I also use pocket worlds and embark early on in the history. I don't know what your world size is.

Using the 4 GB patch allows you to use more memory, but it just means it runs with a larger world without crashing, although more physical memory in the machine might mean more of the data is actually IN memory rather than cached on one of the disks (I suspect the SSD will be used if that's where the OS is installed). A pocket world helps a bit, a small embark helps (although 3*3 is the smallest that guarantees a certain feature), keeping the population of both dwarves and animals down helps.
But yes, there are performance issues...

I've got no serious issues, about 5-10 fps drop comparing two versions against each other. Feature additions can be seen in world gen more, where my machine dies at about 100-150 years depending on size - this has dropped my world dimensions by a degree. The calendar advancement is sometimes really slow, although it takes usually 5ish mins at most. Forts usually take some naps during season changes but that's it. Overall I've no problems to reach really mature forts barring the gameplay related problems (occasional inexicable lack of sieges, quirky farming etc.). Might try and take on HFS with current version, and see how it goes, .34 didn't choke badly (15-20fps) when circus came to town. And no, I'm not using 4Gb patch, the game occasionally CTDs but so it did in .34 too.

You mean adamantine? The vagueness doesn't really help anyone but those who already know.

Try using less civs and sites and also use smaller worlds.
Also try keeping your view inside your fortress where no outside tiles are drawn, I noticed a 20-30 FPS difference from looking at the outside world and staying inside.
