Miserable dorf suddenly became ecstatic
« on: December 01, 2014, 11:14:54 am »

More than 20 dorfs were killed recently so many dorfs became Miserable. So of them even start fist fight, killing even more. So my population cap was broken. Suddently the miserable chief medical dwarf gave birth to her 14th child. And she became ecstatic.

Giving birth is a massive mood booster for dwarves. I seem to recall something about it being helpful in recovering from tantrum spirals - all the new mothers would be happy and survive the crash. Until the legendary miner goes beserk in the meeting hall, heh.

Now my mayor was beaten up and lose many of her teeth. But she was fine. Crimes were reported but no one got punished. Maybe everyone was busy buring the dead or store their clothes. Sigh.

About 1000 point bonus to happiness it seems (I'm still playing 40.13 so things are easier).

Their mood gain is about twice their mood loss if their child then died right in front of them.

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

In terms of pre 40.13...

It's doubly so if it's the dwarf's life dream. Also tantruming is very therapeutic for dwarves. Throwing items or punching someone can make a dwarf go from miserable to ecstatic.

I've had a dwarf get 16 happy thoughts from starting fights.  Thankfully he did little damage, got over it, and moved on.

I mean, I did accidentally lock him into the cavern for a few months, forcing him to sleep on dirt, eat vermin and muddy water but it was an accident!  You got out alive, stop freaking out buddy, sheesh.

Solitary confinement can be great for some dorfs. I built a floodgate in a rather inaccessible place by accident once, discovered I had locked in a miner whose tantrum had severely injured a puppy only moments before, and decided to leave him there. When he was released, tired, hungry, and thirsty, he was the happiest, friendliest dorf ever, and went straight to a party in the sculpture garden. I did not check if he liked the companionship of others or not, I'm sorry. He stopped hitting puppies, and was happy, so I saw it as a win.

Keep in mind that all this only holds true for older versions. Since the emotion rewrite, "miserable" and "ecstatic" no longer exist and fulfilling a life dream, finishing an artefact or becoming a parent is just a happy thought which will only take the smallest chip off the tragedy of being rained upon half a year ago.

True, but flooding them with happy thoughts is still a very good way to at least attempt to keep them sane, I use a lot of zones designated as sculpture gardens (dining room, hospital with all it's bags on the floor, dormitories when I use them) in order to flood them with good thoughts. They will need time to recover from trauma and stress, though.

I don't know if it has been changed in current version.
But it seems when a mayor is unhappy, remove him from position, he will be reelected and feel happy. Repeat that several times and you'll get an ecstatic mayor.

I figured it out after my former mayor went insane and the new mayor was about to go insane.

Even when the Dwarves lose a child of only a few years old, they are grateful and happy for the having had that time with them even if it was short. How is that messed up?

maybe they just focus on the time they had with that child. The loss hurts but the memories help.

There are dwarves that won't work for. Ones that are chronically stressed or depressed and losing a child would be a one way trip towards insanity.

Some of my dwarves could really use an SSRI of some sort, or a benzodiazipine. Like a few xanax and a prozac would mitigate some of this.

I think I'm just going to start singling out those dwarves, remove them from any occupations and just let them tour sculpture gardens and zoos all day. They are just too delicate to deal with any sort of failure.

That or I will atom smash them. I'll figure something out.

Keep them out of the rain and give them a nice bedroom and a cushy desk job. I've cured an herbalist from the grumpies by making her a clothing professional, and she's a happy and productive mamber of the fort now. Job satisfaction is a cheap (and often even useful for the fort!) source of numerous happy thoughts, as is producing masterworks. You need proper skilled jobs for that, though, hauling doesn't count.

Dwarves like these have a higher appreciation for the simpler things, like magma. Just station them in a room and watch as the magma fills the room, covering them in its warm embrace.
