Encrusting ammo: what does it do
« on: December 01, 2014, 11:05:00 am »

what does encrusting ammo do?
is it like adding a tip to bolts? or is it just a weight modifier?
Does encrusting bolts have any practical purpose other than valuable bolts?
If there is already a non necro thread or thread that has thoroughly solved this pls link

It does nothing other than make the ammo more valuable.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It does, but decorations are not counted for it. Only the weight of the standard bolt.

And i frankly don't know why should i bother to encrust ammo...

it's useful when throwing your hard earned gems into magma or an atom smasher just isn't enough

Encrusting masterwork ammo is a good idea since using them in combat has a chance to destroy the "artwork" and upset whoever made them, making masterwork ammo more of a tradegood than a weapon.

I remember something about being able to put the fort mark on stuff, like the decorated armor from the caravan guards, so maybe a dwarf with a high humor skill can write "ouch" on his bolts or something like.

A stack of finely encrusted steel bolt can be really expensive. In this case I really hate the merchants who sell them...

It can be used in ceremony, a noble's accident, for instance, or the equippment of guard captain (who is usually wearing useless artefact armor made of soft metal in my fort).

As far as I know masterworks being destroyed doesn't cause bad thoughts if they are lost doing what they were made for...

Or if a dwarf has a vendetta against something or someone they can write the name of their target on a bolt and save it to be used against them...

It's still very possible the ammo will be 'stolen' if a target flees off the map while pincushioned.
