Too damn peacefull.
« on: December 01, 2014, 08:11:32 am »

I've read a string if other posts about no goblins showing up.  I've got over 120 dorfs a baron and have been making tones of gold silver and electrum chairs tables and chests and things.  3 or 4 years in.   No goblins, no kobolds, I did have a brief out break of lycanthropy but that has been dealt with.

On my civil screen I don't have any goblin neighbours.  I'm not on an island but there is a huge mountain range to the north.

Any idea when the fun will show up?  Are others still having this problem?

The fun will never show up if there are no goblins in your civilisation screen, unfortunately. Only FBs and Titans. The huge mountain range might cause problems, or there might just be no goblins left in your world.

At some point after DF 0.40.14 the system was changed so that attackers don't automatically win all sieges during world generation. I think it was around then that things became 'too peaceful' (according to a number of forum posts).

I kind of like it, DF is a lot more realistic now.
Instead of having huge goblin ambushes and armies attack you regularly no matter where you embarked, you can now get heavy enemy contact, medium/late or no enemy armies at all.
Now you have to embark close to goblin towers if you want to get besieged.

It's good because it's nice being able to build your fortress in peace once in a while and it makes the game feel less, well "gamey".

:/  I am glad I modded in more enemy civs and adjusted ethics.

More conflict of interests, and more KILL_XXX:AOKAY.  And more death Gods to worship.

---

I dont disagree that its a bit more realisitc now, but I find myself missing the sieges.  Id like to see 34.11 size sieges when it happens.

Until you are the mountainhome and have an entire army all in steel, and still haven't seen any goblins. Then it's just lonely and boring.

'Tab' cycles through information about an area, and one of the screens is neighbours. Necromancer towers are purple 'I's, goblin dark fortresses are, IIRC, purple 'pi's.

I'm not convinced the pre embark info is truthful, however. My last two embarks had goblins all over the map except islands and remote mountain locations (using a pocket universe), and in the last one I'm fairly sure it said War as well, but in neither case there is any goblin civ on the civ screen. I THOUGHT I would get Kobold neighbors by settling with a Cave in the embark, but no.

Caves are more frequently settled by kobolds than anywhere else, but there are no guarantees. Also, the goblins may have had bigger problems than your fort - maybe your civilisation was busy crushing them like bugs?

No, my civ was busy being crushed. I belonged to a "dead or dying" civ. Just started a new embark. Same thing, i.e. war with goblins on pre embark, but no goblins on the civ screen (immediately on embark, before unpausing). Hm, monsters might be crushing the goblins as well.
The cave was a bit irritating in that it let a FB out of the first cavern, yet no spored had been released, but yes, I figured there was only a chance of getting Kobolds.

you won't see anything on the civ screen after embark until you encounter that civ.

Hm, so I should probably wait until the goblins come knocking then.

I don't get people talking as if goblin sieges were mindblowingly interesting in old versions. Yes, in the very beginning, when you didn't know what you were doing. But later on, when you played a long term fort and sieges arrived like the seasons and goblin losses reached the four digits and you faced them in open battle with a handful dwarves, and still had no losses - no, not interesting at all - didn't even need all the exploits people were using.
