I kind of like it, DF is a lot more realistic now.
Instead of having huge goblin ambushes and armies attack you regularly no matter where you embarked, you can now get heavy enemy contact, medium/late or no enemy armies at all.
Now you have to embark close to goblin towers if you want to get besieged.

It's good because it's nice being able to build your fortress in peace once in a while and it makes the game feel less, well "gamey".

Until you are the mountainhome and have an entire army all in steel, and still haven't seen any goblins. Then it's just lonely and boring.
That is the time you retire your fort if you are done designing and building it, at that point you probably are going to retire sooner or later anyway. That's also sort of the persons own fault if they don't check their surrounding area first.

goblins were very much listed as there and at war. That is sort of the point of my complaint.

I guess that's Toadys fault then for not updating the civ screen in the embark menu, I think it doesn't account for all the new stuff like path and length of the path to get to your fort.

For now if people want sieges, my advice would be to embark as close to goblin towers as possible.

This is exactly the problem I'm having. I'm pretty close to the goblin frontlines, they were listed as hostile neigbors in embark, they're very much active and alive, but not a single one has come to visit. I made a welcome death pit mat for them and everything :(

Actually, on that note, I haven't had any snatchers, and only one thief, in 3 years. The kobolds should be all over me by now, especially since that one thief managed to get away with a copper battleaxe, but nope. The greatest threat to my fortress is boredom, even Larry (the forgotten beast sitting around in the basement) seems a little placid. I throw kittens and nobles down to him every now and then, and sure, he kills them, but it's like he just can't be bothered to put the effort in anymore.

Might be time for the circus.

There needs to be a way to make yourself at war with everyone, its rare to be at war with goblins as it is.

Well, you can always intentionally piss off the caravans, I suppose.

Actually, I'm curious, does that cause them to declare war on your entire civ, or just your fortress? I kinda like the idea of changing the course of history by starting wars, and watching how it plays out over the years.

It makes you hostile, but I dont think it puts you at war. Is war just a placeholder that has no difference then the red ----- on the embark?

Agreed. I have abandoned several ideal forts that had steel and were very close to goblin civs at war when nothing happened. I had to quit.

On the other hand my most recent fort was just killed by a gobbo attack because I assumed they didn't happen anymore and didn't build any defense

The fun will never show up if there are no goblins in your civilisation screen, unfortunately.
Actually, the goblins will appear on the neighbours list when they first interact with yours, such as by trading, sending diplomats, stealing, or sieging. In his case it's probably because of the mountain range being in the way.

Before embarking, check the neighbours screen by pressing tab a couple of times. Usually you will see "Dwarves, goblins, humans, elves, kobolds" in some order. There will always be dwarves(or whatever creature your civ is). Kobolds are not always there though, but usually everyone else is.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

So from what you have told me:
A/ goblins are showing up later in this version so maybe i should just wait.
B/ since i remember a large moutin range to north there may not be any goblins around and the may never show up.
3/ since i didn't check the civs or nieghbours tab at embark there is no way for me to know.

Hmmmmmm

1 and 3 for sure.  Although I was getting ambushes by season 6 in 34.11, season 5 on a good day.

They showed up.  They really sucked.  but some of my unarmored archer dudes decided to go outside and shoot crowbows at them instead of standing ontop of the wall behind the fortifications like I told them, still no problem.  The dumb dorfs are in an electrum box. the smart dorfs are in an iron shirt and they stay out of the box. Ive also manged to offer the elves something wooden, still not sure what, so I guess I will see those guys next year.

I still have a pile of mangled goblins outside.  I would like to build them tombs.  Is there a way I can do that.  I also have a full set of werecoons bones that are nicely sunbleached by now.  I would like to put them in a tomb as well.  I think rows and rows of defeated enemies in gold and silver sarcophagus surrounding my walls would be cool.

I don't think you can give them tombs, but you can write memorial plaques for them. Also, you ought to dispose of the bodies as they will spook the civilians as well as caravans,

You can dig a 1 tile hole and drop the corpse in, build a slab over it and pretend it to be a tomb

I embarked about the same distance from goblins, humans and a tower.
First human caravan arrived after almost two years, got a few groups of necromancers and then a big undead siege fairly early, but still haven't seen a single goblin.
