Ironically enough that was my original plan but the shrapnel would have blown half her jaw clean off. Which would be very problematic for her social life.

Huh? Why couldn't she survive? Err... Or is why her surviving so surprising? Like SB pointed out she got treatment quickly and the shrapnel didn't hit any critical parts of her brain, so it's more than possible for her to live.

I would retcon it but I'd find it hard to believe. I mean, she'd be bloody terrifying.

Well if they don't give her a prosthetic one then yeah, I can see that. But I'd be terribly surprised if they let her run about without a jaw scaring everyone, since they can make robolimbs and junk. Social and mental development is just as important as physical and intellectual development, so letting her be an outcast due to lacking a jaw would be silly.
