Is the game playable yet?
« on: November 29, 2014, 07:46:28 am »

Hey guys, Been a player for a while and started playing again when the recent big update came out however I found that:

Farming was bugged, Dwarves carried round seeds in a weird ways (1 dwarf with the entire fort's seeds in one barrel) which meant I could barely get any food from farming now matter how many growers I had, which was infuriating.

Second, have spent twice as long as normal due to lack of food getting a large fort with several squads of axe lords etc, I would still lose 2/3 combats because my highly trained dwarves would stand around not attacking while being attacked by goblins, also infuriating.

I know these are registered bugs and im just checking if these are fixed now because they made the game unplayable for me.

Both of those are still here I think but...

If you make a seed stockpile and disable barrels, they will use bags and you won't have that problem nearly as much.

When I station dwarves sometimes they won't kill things but if I order them to kill they do so just fine.

That one's still here, and I've lost a squad of hammerlords to a forgotten beast because of it. It seems that the bug crops up because of burrow alerts, I never get it when simply ordering a squad to station. You can make dorfs snap out of it by deactivating the squad via military menu (so they turn civilian and start running to the burrow), then issuing a kill/station order. If that doesn't work, try doing the same, but also turn off the burrow alert before issuing orders, that's guaranteed to make squads kill things again.

Anyway, the game is certainly playable. These are annoying issues, but you can negate about 90% of frustration by playing with the settings.

I just don't assign the military to the burrows at all. I didn't know there was a way to just tell everyone to go there.

I tried burrow alerts, but I never got the hang of them.

0.40.13 is probably the most stable
0.40.16 is the latest to be supported by Dwarf Therapist (with memory layout file)
0.40.19 is the most recent, and also the most stable after 0.40.13 (IMO).

I've certainly never gotten the standing around problem. The seed barrel is just normal, I wouldn't expect it to ever be fixed.

Well, dwarves will probably be smarter with placing items in containers once Toady starts working on jobs rework.

Actually I don't know what assigning squads to burrows does, but you can assign all inactive dwarves to a burrow from the alerts menu, which causes every civilian to head there. It's a bit buggy, - sometimes there's a lot of cancellation spam and dwarves that were hauling an item will still be still carrying it, even if it weighs a ton or is forbidden. Nonetheless, it's a handy way to get everyone to safety.

That's probably why I don't get it, then. If it's based around burrows. I only use burrows to either replicate Planepacked, or get my main hall dug and engraved by one dwarf while the others mine.

Planepacked was fixed in 0.40.05 or so.

make 2 seed stockpiles, 1 closer to still, dining hall etc, the other closer to the farm. the one closer to the farm will only accept from the other seed stockpile. Any new seeds will be collected with the help of seed stockpile no1 while farmers pick their seeds from stockpile no2.

Usually, often, not always. A plan may be foolproof in theory, but almost nothing is dwarfproof.

Unplayable? Those bugs are minor at best and have workarounds, did you try turning the squads off then turning them back on?

Also , the growers will get around to planting eventually, just make three or four farms and grow different crops, you should get the food in time for your dwarves to not starve... I've never really had problems with this, but then again I always start a map by ordering plants gathered from aboveground to see what sort of stuff the region has, so I don't know how deadly a slow start in agriculture is...

Putnam might have been referring to the original Planepacked bug, not the replica bug. Or, maybe he's wrong. Or, maybe you are on an old version - I've never used it, so I don't know.

I havnt tried fort mode yet, and plan to start one on a non-savage island, which shouldnt be affected by varius military glitches.

It's definitely not unplayable.
The seeds/plants inside a barrel problem remains. I should have atleast 150 brewable plants at a time, but the 3 brewers often seem to 'steal' each others plants and causing a brew job to cancel.
(I have to re-instate the brew job once in a while, but maybe the manager can automatically do this?)
It is possible that farming is a bit slower to start up now, but it's still very much doable.
I actually turned out to have mostly plump helmets, followed by finger millets and sellery.

As for military.. Havent had a single problem with it, but I also didn't assign burrows/routes or anything.
My squad just trains 100% and I give manual orders, when it's necessary.
Managed to kill 10 goblins, 100% of the siege, without getting hit once (yea, my danger room works!)
Forgotten beasts are my vampire targets, which often kills said vampire.
