Building a public arena
« on: November 28, 2014, 09:09:12 pm »

So, I have grand plans to make a public coliseum in my fort for the purpose of simultaneously disposing of trapped goblins and training military. I have a couple questions.

-If I have an overhang of one tile around the boundary of the arena, (supposing the arena is two z-levels deep), would anything be able to climb out? Would it be better to just build glass walls so the public can watch the festivities?

This brings me to question two.

- If I do indeed place a meeting area around the pit so the general public can watch, will they get bad thoughts from watching goblins die? Would it be better to just let my idle military watch so they can be conditioned?

I think goblins will interrupt jobs. I'm not sure about your military, but your civ will run from them.

Given that civilians can get serious cases of bad moods from seeing corpses of vanquished foes on the refuse pile (they claim to have seen the creature die during the last season as long as the corpses lie there), I'd say having them watch is a dangerous experiment in mood dive control.

I believe a two level high wall with a floor overhang will work, but have no first hand experience. I'd recommend a wall or fortification rather than a floor, though (or, of course, windows on top of the floor).

yea dwarves will get scared seeing enemies through glass windows. I wanted to do that too, but the wiki mentioned that. It sucks, an arena would be cool.

Ah. I see. I guess I will build it near the barracks at least to let the military get desensitized.

I think I will make an additional entrance for releasing dangerous animals if I don't feel like letting my military train.

Yea, I suppose gladiatorial games using prisoners of war would be against dwarf ethics.

It would be so much fun tho :(
