How to mess up my fort.
« on: November 28, 2014, 01:56:45 am »

I realized that it takes quite a bit of dwarf fortress skill and knowledge to simply lose a fort. Other games random button clicking brings ruin, not so for dwarf fortress. I asked a non player to ruin my fort, after some time he designated one glass workshop to be built. Easily solved.

So along those lines, what is the simplest way to have FUN with your fort?

For myself, open the cavern defenses to release FB's. As bonus get my magma cart system to dump magma in the fortress. Extra deaths from being ran over by the evil thing. And if you removed construction from the first level of my constructed fortress that would result in allot of fun as well, as a mountain drops onto my most populated area. Perhaps flinging my hapless dwarfs (burrowed on a bridge) too fall on a forest of upright weapons. Though the easiest way by far would be to dig into the river to flood my fortress.

Yea. There is allot of fun to be had.

Something unpredictable sounds most FUN. ie. don't just flood the fort with magma.

Letting FBs accumulate in sealed caverns and then releasing them all at once could be fun.
Ensuring all moods fail. Never burying your dead.

Every time you get an ambush or siege, immediately draft your entire fort and give them all a kill order for all enemies.

Atomsmash all unhappy dorfs to see who's the last standing one?

Oh I play this meta-game a lot.

What I like to do is settle along a river and build normally completely below the maximum water-level. Then when I get bored, I breach the flow and let the halls get flooded with no chance of escape from below without legendary swimming. The game from that point on the about gradually moving the population and supplies downwards without letting anyone drown, starve or get stranded, after each area is cleared and the new safety measures are almost in place, I deconstruct more doors to let the water through and the next level of the challenge begins.

A "win state" involves progressing far enough that the water drains into the caverns, bonus points if nobody died and everyone is reasonably happy. Ultra-super-double bonus points if the embark is near a necromancer's tower, allowing zombies to pursue you through the flooded tunnels. (Note: I have never actually accomplished any of this, but I often try.)

Building lots of tiny, quickly abandoned forts and fleeing from a relentless enemy that can't even be injured is much harder than building a massive citadel and watching goblins murder themselves on your steel. Especially when you get deep enough that water pressure moves faster than your nomads do.

You want to mess up things? Hmm, I dont usually need to "help" my fortresses if I want them ruined, and I think I would just retire one if everything is too good and boring.

Try some FUN and play a human challenge if dorven realm gets boring. Surface city with walls, towers and and battlements, fields outside the main wall (forces you to deal with sieges quickly) and every building is dedicated to certain workshop etc. Build slums outside the wall. Dont dig too deep, it's unnatural. Build a stone castle when you get enough fame and nobles. You need to expand your city as more fools rush in.

See goblins and monsters climb over your walls and toss your bowmen from battlements, trading being the only reliable option to acquire anything, constant stress being only friend of your citizens and one fire-breathing monster being the doom of your city.

I survived three years until first civil war occurred (it was the super stress version of DF but still...), and second expedition that went to reclaim the city survived likewise three years and it seems things are on the edge now... one wrong move and bodies will fill the streets. It's fun to see things going south once in a while.

A method taught to me by imprudence and the RNG:

0) Build fort with central staircase running straight up/down.
1) Decide to go on some exploratory mining.
2) Run into a cavern layer, hitting water.
3) Instantly flood all the corridors, but leaving some rooms to fill up slowly.
4) Have FUN seeing how many dwarves can be saved by swift mining.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Thanks! Lots of neat ideas to try.

What do you think of this one.
I'm just set out in a fortress in a world where goblins and elves are the dominant species. Both are at war with me. I made the elves evil and use metal armour and weapons. The elves also have the building destroyer level 2 tag as well. Active all four seasons. And to top it all off a nerco tower is near by.

I'm purposely refraining from invulnerable defenses.

If you want a long term established fortress to fall, just designate all coffins to be deconstructed and slabs to be atomsmashed. He-llooo, murderous ghostx20

I had a lot of fun building a fort that could be submerged in magma while still leaving fortifications and such exposed, with a meeting area/vomit painted parlor which was accessed through the nice airy layer above the intermittent magma sea.

Then I started adding more magma and accidentally overwhelmed the system, got magma draining down into the access staircases and burning a single gear... which was supposed to be used to shut off the magma pumps by linking them to a bunch of gears for drag...

I don't actively try to sabotage my forts. Many die FPS deaths. I have both flooded forts with magma and water before, though. It's the accidental stuff that is more fun. It doesn't seem very fun if I plan for it.

RIght now I have a FB running around in the caverns, which are walled off. That thing has killed everything else down there. I might break the caverns back open and face it. Maybe it will slaughter most of my people, and the remaining ones will have to struggle to continue.

I just keep wondering where the goblins are at.

If you have an evil reanimating biome somewhere in your embark or a nearby necro tower then I recommend you start up a large meat industry using lets say elephants, rhinos, cave crocs or jabberers and place the corpse dump out where they will be likely to rise again.

I just keep wondering where the goblins are at.

I see this a lot. Even though I intentionally set up camp right next to large goblin civs I must admit the sieges are quite underwhelming and rare. I even had a fort recently where I never saw anything other than necros or bandits despite my location. I think Toady needs to beef up goblin AI and tactics to make them a viable threat again.

A few things I think Toady could do to help the situation would be to first of all give NPC elite soldiers equipment that reflects their status such as full suits of iron or steel armor with a high quality weapon.

Second, give attackers organized by a civilization battering rams that can destroy any construction including bridges, walls, fortifications etc.

Third, change their overworld pathing behavior to have a heavy bias for going after player owned fortresses with this bias increasing with wealth and population.

I think just adding a few minor tweaks like this could make the game a lot more fun. Getting sieges should be a real threat.

I especially like the bold. Ever since the attackers always win bug was fixed I almost never see goblins.

Melting Sky, Vjek made me an awesome pocket island where I could get all that stuff and I haven't survived an embark long enough to wall myself into the dirt yet. lol I need some sort of intermediary challenge level. I embarked on an evil spot (sinister) for my most recent fort, but literally nothing evil has happened but it raining a non-syndrome causing elf blood. The worst my fort has dealt with is some mild depression from it.

Battering rams and siege ladders/towers would be a great introduction, especially if you could hurt them, and they needed pushers like minecarts need sometimes. Just, make them slow.
