2x2 Non-Legible, Barely Playable, and Very Useless tileset.

Yes, this is supremely useless.

The idea was that it might make a good basis for a mini map for anyone that can figure out how to program something like that. For now... It makes for a good laugh or maybe a good screen-shot overview of a very large fortress.

Yes. This odd looking block below here is the tileset, if you scroll you might miss it:

Fun fact: if this were 3x3, you could have every single tile be a unique combination of pixels.

It can be even more hardcore: 2x4 tile gives exactly 256 possible variations, while 3x3 - 512

Let's say other tiles are just as good as #158 :)

I considered 2x4, but decided to mention 3x3 instead because 2x4 is ugly.

This is ridiculous, has no immediately clear purpose, impossible to reasonably use, and does nothing but make an already ridiculously arcane interface less user-friendly.

This is thus the only way dwarf fortress should be played, well done.

This is awesome. Though if you wanted some more variation in some things you could make the tiles checkered/semitransparent. It should be in the LNP.

And now I want to use the hardcore tileset. It needs a colorscheme though.

Wow. Really guys? :D

No graphics set to go with it?
Taffer! Go clear a candy vein! (And I mean that in the nicest way)

I think this is the most feedback I've ever gotten before! But I'll take it into consideration that people might actually use this just for the kicks.

Here is an updated version so that you can better distinguish between z-levels.

Screenshots:

After taking it into adventure mode, I was amazed at how fast the game ran despite the screen size. I think if you are experiencing low fps and want to leave the game running on its own for a while switching over to this tileset would give you a huge boost in fortress mode.

*Note* Setting your font to [FONT:2x2_mini.png] in the init.txt and leaving the fullfont to [FULLFONT:tileset_of_your_preference.png] will allow you to switch modes with the F11 key... sort of like puting a hypothetical turbo key into dwarf fortress. (*Edit* After some testing I think there is a boost in speed. Not sure by how much, and I don't think it was as big as  I was expecting. But it seemed to be there none-the-less.)

And just so you know.. Don't hit the F12 key in hopes of getting a glimmer of legible text. The game WILL crash.

That is one of the most outlandish Ideas ever!

I'd say go for it!

Here is a 1x1 version of the tileset, just in case you aren't going blind fast enough.

Some example screenshots of the 1x1:

I have both a question and a suggestion: Can the code behind Stonesense be used to display Df in a second window, just like stonesense already does, but instead of using fancy isometric graphics, it would use a normal tileset?

If yes, then my suggestion would be to call it "Minimap.exe" and use a 1-pixel tileset (this works and is displayed correctly in df, I tried.) Obviously everything is 1 pixel large, but you can see different colors and movement. It would look exactly like any minimap in any modern strategy game. It would be much more precise than the current ingame minimap, which takes up 1/3 of the menu anyway.

If this new minimap can be displayed over the normal Df menu, that would be even better. The lower right area of the build/command menu is empty and has enough space. :)

Suggested before :P (I even remember another thread with a 1 pixel tileset :P

Edit: There it is: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=121451.msg4203086#msg4203086

Hrmm. That sounds pretty brilliant. I just thought of a default mini map plugin. However, Running dwarf fortress in the background as the mini map with a more graphics oriented interface to display everything (either 3d or isometrically) seems to be a far better idea! This sounds very doable with something like stonesense or a modified version thereof, but it is certainly far beyond me.

No idea, but I will say this.
Becoming a coder  is incredibly easy.
Here's what I did.
1: read through a free online c++ book, and get bored halfway tthrough when it starts talking about complicated stuff.
2: read tthrough the stonesense code to get a feel for how it more or less seems to work.
3: start making small modifications, and progressively make bigger ones.
4: you are now a coder.

Seems like I should start trying to learn C++ UGH!

Gah, I can't even properly make a 1x1 tileset! Something is wrong! ;)

Still a good idea. The wheel wasnt properly finished the last time it was invented, so no third party mini map came of it. Maybe this time it will be better. :)
