I'm really not convinced that this task couldn't have just been a use of Animal Dissection or something.

I have to agree with that. Animal caretaker and dissector don't really have anything to do, after all, and gelding is a feasible thing to ask of your dissector.

What does the animal caretaker profession do? Are there any jobs for it at the moment?

In theory I think it helps your injured animals heal faster, but in practice it is utterly useless.

beard blades. This must be a thing. Also, prehensile beards, fuck yeah.

Also legendary gelder/woodcutter... heh. He chops or cuts wood. I see what you did there.

It would make sense for it to fall under the animal caretaker/trainer type rolls.  Gelding normally falls under the job of a Vet in the real world.  Or depending on the farm, the farm owner/hands who care for the animals anyway.

I think "care" is the inappropriate word there considering gelding is done un-anesthetized.

I think they just pinch them.

It's done a few different ways.  It seems if you get a farm vet to do it a lot of them cut them off, but if you are a farm hand they rubberband em and let the circulation get cut off and they will slowly wither and fall off.  Apparently its claimed it doesn't really hurt em.  Though I can't see how that is knowing how damn sensitive my own dangly bits are.  Just watching someone take a nut shot on a TV video is enough to make me feel pain.

It mgiht also be more based on what animal it is.  Most of the cutting I've seen done was on pet animals like dogs, and on horses.  Cows seem to get the rubberband.

Not really. You're aware of how gelding is done? Generally with a large rubber band, and either a large crew / rope or a very fast sprinter. Eventually it withers and pinches off, leaving behind a very sad bull.
