The next day we get word that the aliens are performing abductions in Egypt.


A squad is assembled and sent out to stop the aliens



A flawless performance! The alien force was obliterated without a single scratch on the XCOM operatives. We must not get too confident, however. This was just a small group of drones and a few of the grey aliens.



Our roster of troops who have seen combat against the alien forces grows!



Another promotion has worked its way through the paper trail




@Ram: Yeah, that should work. Quite a few to pick from now, if you check the barracks list in the OP.

Our new aircraft arrives. Good timing, as we were down to a single functioning fighter.



A week passes uneventfully, and the base takes the opportunity to repair and rest up in preparation for the next alien attack.

However, we get some very bad news. It seems that Japan has, despite our early successes, decided to withdraw from the XCOM project. Rumors persist that they have cut some deal with the aliens, but we have no proof of this.



A few days later we receive and urgent message from the UK about an alien abduction occurring. Early reports indicate that there may be more aliens present than we have seen to date.


A team of veterans is assembled to combat the alien threat.






And, our first combat with any soldiers that have classes! Should be fun to see how it goes.

Don't worry about the Japan thing. It's a hardcoded event for a nation to leave in the first month since you can take countries back via base assaults in Long War. Does mean Asia won't be possible for a continent bonus for quite a while, though. Which is fine, as we were talking about going towards North America anyway.

This seems pretty interesting. Unfortunately, I have no experience whatsoever with XCOM, so I'll have to just stick to watching.

Well, if the input that's required from me doesn't rely upon extensive knowledge of XCOM's game mechanics I could probably join in... What would you suggest I do?

Grab a soldier, if nothing else. You don't even need to know how to play the game, you can just go with whatever idea sounds the most fun/useful to you. Or you can fill a gap in the squad make-up. Ideally we'd have at least 1 of every subclass available.

Most of participating in an XCOM let's play is really just rooting for your personal soldier and seeing if they become an ultimate alien-stomping warrior or get gunned down. If they die, you sign up for a new soldier.

Either works, depending on what you want to do. Probably easiest to just select an unnamed character and customize them, but if there isn't anyone that fits what you're looking for you can use the signup sheet format and just wait until we get what you're looking for.

Well, I'll just make up a character sheet anyway. I'm going to have this first character be based off of the Ghost unit type from Starcraft. They have a low life expectancy...

Importantly: What's your advice on "Equipment" option? I'm not too sure what to do with that...

Name: Delta 1. No nickname. Or rather, Ghosts traditionally have no name  If a more traditional name would be preferred, I'll come up with those as well.
Gender: Male
Nationality: Germany/England pref. Not necessary, though.
Appearance: The Brood War version of ghosts, appearance wise, not the SC2 version, even though they're pretty similar.) I'm not sure if there are other options, but from the armor sets in the OP, the first carapace armor if there's an option for the helmet to be white, or the second carapace armor would be best.

Preferred class: Scout/Sniper. Sniper is pref, but go with scout if it's more useful for the team.
Preferred weapon: High Caliber Sniper/Marksman Rifle. If XCOM has more specific stuff, if possible pref is a Sniper/Marksman Rifle that shoots 25mm HE rounds.
Preferred equipment: Laser Sight, Battle Scanner/Smoke Grenade depending on circumstances. (Basically, that choice is up to you. Whatever is most effective for the mission, or works best for the squad if there's no mission intel.)
Preferred tactics: Cautious.

Sounds good. We don't have Carapace armor yet, but that gives me an idea of what to do appearance-wise.

As for equipment, check this page out. Anything without a tech requirement is currently available. But you can generally put stuff like grenades (explosive/smoke/flashbang), hi capacity clips, scopes, extra armor, stuff like that. You can get an idea of what types of things are currently available by looking at the stuff I have on the soldiers in their loadout screens.

Arrgh, it all penalizes mobility.

I guess:

Laser Sight
Battle Scanner/Smoke Grenade depending on circumstances. (Basically, that choice is up to you. Whatever is most effective for the mission, or works best for the squad if there's no mission intel.)
