Took a little longer than I expected to get a chance to play, but I'll get started now. Africa it is.

@Crazysheep: Pilots can be taken, but I can't give them specific names or anything. I can give them a random nickname, though, so you can pick one of planes after I've gotten them set up.

@Vector: Oh, we have plenty of room for people to grab soldiers. It's XCOM, we're going to have about 40 soldiers in the roster and many of them will die.

Class: Medic
Weapon: Carbine w/pistol
Equipment: Medkit/Smoke Grenade
Tactics: Stay in partial cover, preferably behind the lines. If somebody gets hit, rush out to heal their ass, then get back into cover. (Obviously, I'll want the Paramedic trait ASAP, as well as any perks that boost the smoke grenade). Otherwise, take potshots with my carbine at whatever target I have the best percentage shot on.

Preferred tactics: Hit enemy with bullets from full cover. Try to prioritize killing shots. Avoid getting shot as much as possible.

Commander, Welcome to XCOM.

We have just completed our first engagement with the alien forces. We have a brief report available for you to peruse.

Overview of the base:


The Hanger, with the Interceptors currently in service


Our research divison. We will need to decide what to being work researching as soon as possible!


Engineering has drawn up this blueprint of the cavern system. We have a lot of expansion possible, as well as a potentially very useful Steam vent near the surface that could be used for power generation.


The Barracks. We have 38 soldiers in service at the moment. All of them, except for the team that just came back, are new to XCOM but solid soldiers from around the globe.

@MaximumZero: I have one American dude. Still a rookie. You want to claim him now or wait to see what class he ends up with?

@RedKing: I have the one American dude and a Brit (along with an Irishman and a Canadian fellow). Want to snag one of those or wait to see if one of them becomes a Medic?

@GUNINANRUNIN: Absolutely no Frenchmen in the roster at all right now. You want to chill until I get one or....?

@Vector: Quite a few options for you, even more if you are willing to go Ukranian instead of just Russian. You want to just wait until one of them gets a Sniper class option or did you want to pick one of them as a rookie?

@Cptn Kaladin Anrizlokum: Two of the Specialists could be snipers. Let me know which one you want.

I figure I should probably give you guys a brief rundown of the 8 Long War subclasses so you know what your options will be. It's a bit different from basic XCOM. You get the core class type (Heavy, Assault, Sniper, Support) but it's broken into two separate perk trees. You effectively have 8 classes in Long War with different abilities and specialization options.


Tactical
  Infantry - Gun specialist. Starts with the ability to fire two shots a round and generally focuses on dealing damage with guns or providing covering fire/overwatch
  Assault - Flanking/Breaching specialist. Starts with the ability to dash and shoot. Generally focuses on close combat or flanking maneuvers.
Heavy Weapons
  Gunner - Machine Gun troop. Gains special ammo options. Focus on suppression and covering fire capabilities.
  Rocketeer - Heavy explosives troop. Gains rockets they can fire. Can also specialize in covering and support fire.
Ranged
  Sniper - Can use Sniper Rifle or Marksman rife (move and shoot). Various damage/support abilities.
  Scout - Starts with Lightning Reflexes. Can use Marksman rifle with limited squad sight or normal guns. Various scouting, movement, and squad fire support abilities.
Support
  Medic - Always has at least one medkit. Can specialize for Medical, Smoke grenades, or Covering fire.
  Engineer - Grenade specialist. Can focus on damage or smoke grenades, as well as some squad fire support abilities.

So the tactical Specialist we have could choose to go Infantry or Assault. You can also choose to get a random class from the 6 not immediately available to a trooper, so if you really don't want to be, say, a sniper/scout you could see what else the game decides to give you.



@Kaos: I have one Australian girl in the roster. Want to just snag her or wait to see what she classes into first?

Personally I'd say that no engineer is particularly specced towards damage. I always used them for cover destruction more than actually killing stuff.
