Obok was the adventurer of that guy who horrified most of the forum with his rape mod.
It's not recommended at all.

Obok Meatgod is a legend among dwarves for having the balls (pun intended) to commit the one atrocity that many members of Bay12 were not happy to accept. He is a truly memorable part of dwarven mythology, ranking alongside Cacame Awemedinade and Boatmurdered, and his legend is highly recommended for anyone wanting to play the game.

he makes a good point. :o if someone can horrify even those of bay12 they are noteworthy individuals. to horrify us is a great achievement in and of its self.

after all. just think about all the other atrocities we don't even bat an eye at. :-\
a tvtropes page for dwarf fortress linked to a page for our community and applied the blue and orange morality trope, I think it fits. :P

I've read Boatmurdered up to about Part 51.  Very entertaining, but it seems like the game has changed a lot since then.  Can anyone recommend a story from a more up-to-date version of the game so I can get a feel for what can be done with a more recent build?

not sure about the version this is using but I know its not that old. its still ongoing and im getting elfed soon (if you want to know why I would want to be a elf in a dwarven fort just read)

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=53107.msg1138607#msg1138607

and its mostly unmoded, save for the nothing (though I think he is using runesmith to make the dorf/elf/human/bogyman/ing work right. most of the artistic license is story wise such as talking forgotten beast and a plot. but over all a good read an you might learn some handy stuff)

My recommendations:
Boatmurdered, of course.
Headshoots and Syrupleaf
Battlefailed and its sequels.
Halltraded - A mess of a fort surrounded by zombie carp that's been built, rebuilt, and renovated again
Deathgate - Colonizing spoilers
Drunk Fortress - Exactly what it sounds like
Bronzemurder and Oilfurnace - Illustrated comics.
One dwarf against the world - The original Urist
Cacame Awemedinade the Immortal Onslaught - Elf king of the dwarves
The legend of Tholtig Cryptbrain - 2,340 dead elves and a cyclops
The Epic of Sodel Udir - Epic poem
Morul Cattenmat - The Most Interesting Dwarf in the World
Bronze colossus vs fluffy wambler.
The Elves of Amanereli - Forum game
Deebus - Kobold hero
Flarechannel - Possibly the greatest piece of architecture ever made in DF
Undergrotto - The second greatest piece of architecture
Copperblazes - The Flarechannel of 2d

I should have this list saved to give to newbies. That, or there should be a forum reading list.

Tuftedstockades, start here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=143405.0 (current and still going on)

So far the story isn't entirely constructed around engineering mistakes made on purpose or "flood the world, lol" effects as in some of the succession forts.

Pardon my shameless plug, but Bloodfist is also pretty good. 14 years of dwarven hell, and many many casualties and reclaims. The name became rather appropriate.

In case I change my sig:

rape isn't funny or cool. Being offensive just to be offensive without actually considering how you might affect others by triggering things like PTSD, and just trivializing a serious issue marks you as a degenerate.

I hear there's a comic going on in the communities and stories tab.  Something about a cheesemaker? Idk, I heard it's pretty good.  Never read it myself, but you should maybe give it a look idk. W/e, you know, it's nbd.

Smashing people's heads in with a hammer isn't funny or cool either. Obok Meatgod is a legend, but a very nasty one - most legends are full of despicable characters. I would be horrified to see Obok Meatgod in real life, but equally to see any of the other gore-splattered dwarf "heroes" too.

Fortunately, DF is just a game, no one is really hurt and every crime, no matter how heinous, is done to an ASCII character.

Everyone on this damn forum could be marked as a degenerate for engaging in virtual horrors. Or you could visit a super-max prison, see some real degenerates, and change your opinions.

For inspiration, there can be only one: The Mermaid Bone Project. Witness Dwarf Fortress: The Cruelty Simulator, at its finest.

As for actual instructions, the wiki is really all you need. I recommend having it open while you play so you can look things up on the spot. Also it helps if you use the Multiple Bedroom Dormitory trick for your first games as it makes housing and happiness relatively pain-free (so you can focus on other things). I believe the trick is detailed in the wiki also, but basically it involves filling a large room with beds and then creating bedrooms that fill up the whole room (and which overlap) creating "Royal Bedrooms" for every dwarf in the fort and greatly increasing space efficiency.

It's a bit "cheaty" for some, but it helps simplify things in the beginning.

Wiki.

Then Boatmurdered. Why haven't you read it already ?

Syrupleaf was nice as well, but not enough magma.

Obok is NOT a story to be proud of. I saw nothing awesome about it. And I'd argue that it was not the "one thing the forumers couldn't accept", but rather the fact that he did this to a child (IIRC) and with no point at all other than suddenly getting the idea. That wasn't a story, it was just an offensive act that could trigger very bad reactions from some.

Everything that Palu suggested is good though.
It's also great to just jump into the game and die a few times, sort of like Dark Souls. Learning from trial and error and by just asking yourself "what does a fortress need?" is a good enough start. Hell, those stories become far more impressive after you've found out how hard it can be to simply survive your first year or two at first. Then you read the story and realise that you haven't even gotten started with the real game yet.

It seems odd for anyone to have such strong reactions to a particular atrocity committed to an ASCII character. It was nothing for Obok himself to boast about, of course, and the story would likely have been forgotten if the Bay12 community had not been so offended by it. It was a Streisand effect.

Obok Meatgod also did other horrible and savage things like beating enemies to death over the course of days. This is also a very real crime and could be horrifying for some, but no one seemed to object to it because a penis was not involved.
