Recommended Reading Material
« on: November 26, 2014, 12:01:21 pm »

Hi All

I discovered DF yesterday and it really looks like my kind of game.

I haven't had a chance to play it yet, and I am pretty busy with work for the next couple of weeks, so my flaming fail of a debut will probably be a while yet.  But in the meantime is there a recommended reading list for new players?  I have currently only read the DF2014 Quickstart guide on the Wiki.

Any recommendations would be great, even if it's just player stories that will whet my appetite for the game.

On the story side of things, you definitely need to read Boatmurdered. It's the reason I and many other people started playing. It's an epic tale. Also Bronzemurder and Cacame Awemedinade.

Learningwise, I personally preferred videos to written guides, you might want to check out CaptainDuck's fantastic tutorial series here. It was made in 2012 but the majority of it is still relevant and unchanged, and it's also pretty entertaining too.

Welcome to the game, and good luck!

Also, if you happen to embark on an aquifer, WanderingKid made a killer video explaining the double slit method to punch through them...

Also these guides. I'm still confused by the stockpile one but the atom smasher is just essential.

...Obok?

Well, i would suggest you to watch some tutorial on youtube right to understand the basic mechanics of the game, then searching your game style.

The wiki is the holy graal for players, i play since 2010 and i still have it opened the whole time in a tab... it's simply essential!

Obok was the adventurer of that guy who horrified most of the forum with his rape mod.
It's not recommended at all.

Most things in the hall of legends: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=89305.0. Especially the succession games, community forts, stories, and adventurers.

Well, you know Palu, not every great DF story worth reading is in the Hall of Legends.  I haven't checked in a while, but there's probably some on-going stories that would be worth checking out in the communities tab...

Of course not, but it's a good place to start.
