Kobolds are pests. They will all be killed in time. These "cutebold" apologists are deluded at best and dangerously insane at worst. I have lost enough dwarves to them large copper daggers to know that the only good kobold is a dying one.

Goblins... well, they're goblins. Good for magma shenanigans, although I like to release them into a room with my military and at least give them an honorable death. (It's more than the scum deserves)

Humans... meh. They don't bring a lot of useful stuff. I generally leave them alone unless I want something from them, but I do not attack them or steal from them.

Elves it depends. If they bring good stuff (cool animals, sun berries, wood) and do not piss me off with wood I will happily trade them, even give them some benefits, and not harm them at all.

If they do not, well, I either ignore them or kill them with my military. (Or have a drowning trap depot designed for that, but killing elves via water doesn't give you any increase in soldier skills). If the caravan is particularly poor or I want to taunt them, I drop all of it into magma.

If elves are available, I'll trade with them, but if I have a choice between having a location with elves and no humans to trade with, or humans and no elves, I'll take the humans. Not because of racisim: Humans arrive with caravans full of fabric and leather. That is useful to me. Elves do not. But I do love the elf tamed beasts. I want a wombat farm one day...

My opinion of Elves are not so much evil (I think people are weird to attack them) but misguided. I don't sell them any wood (Wood is expensive anyway, keep it for my smelting) and I leave them be. I've had elf caravans arrive with a few olives, some wooden swords, and a few empty cages and so on, and I just felt plain sorry for them. Like any people with a religion, they are pathetic, and I don't want to hurt the poor things. Soft in the head.

Humans are great. Cloth, cloth, cloth, fish which didn't come out of a cave, and plenty of leather. I'll trade with them happily.
I find your comment on religion offensive, ignorant and crude.

I do, however, agree with the rest of your comment.

it made me chuckle, personally. I thought it was pretty spot on.

Ah, the casual racism of Dwarf Fortress.

For clarification, Elves only eat the corpses of enemies they kill in combat; they won't eat sentients solely for food, unlike the goblins.

See, that is something I love. Very Hawaiian of them, to take the strength of their enemies, and all that.

Everyone knows that kobolds and goblins are evil... Pure evil. But some remain unaware of the greater threat that humans pose, not least the elves. So I ask the Bay 12 community, how do you usually deal with other races when they come?
I, for one, kill any and all elves when they arrive. If they are traders I seize everything and then kill one so the other escapes. The humans are sinister and too strong for me in the beginning of the game... But I am cunning... Usually I just wait until I have a good enough military and then take them down. I don't really like killing by collapsing random shit on them because it's too easy. As for goblins and their stunted allies the kobolds, I trap them in a cage and then chuck them into the Colosseum.
Kobolds aren't allies with goblins and they aren't pure evil, just anxious untrusting and greedy. As for humans I quite like them. Though they are medieval humans which means they still accept slavery, but at least it's not slavery based on racism so it's a bit better. Also you shouldn't mess with humans in fortress mode generally. Humans and dwarves are the only ones who will actually properly siege your fortress when attacking. What that means is rather than charge right at you they start a big campfire outside your fort and wait there stopping any outside activity until you send your soldiers to them so traps won't work. They're also bigger than dwarves so you can't take armor from them directly, and they get a minor strength bonus from being bigger. Then they're the only civ other than dwarves to have alloys so they can use bronze against you which is better than anything goblins or elves will be using. Elves I don't normally bother fighting because I don't normally have forts for long enough to set up a good military. If I did end up with a good military without much to use it on, I would probably go to war with the elves.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

you can annihilate the elves with just traps. Their armor is awful. Extra points for cage trapping them and using them as target practice.

Every sentient race is the same. They act according to what they are.

I suppose I just have negative feelings for any race. Dwarfs are lazy drunks. Elves are soft headed hippies. Humans are pretentious. Goblins are war-mongers. And Kobolds are thieves.

However, having a fortress to protect and manage, goblins and Kobolds get killed. And I like to make enemies with humans and elves as well. Not from any angry against them, I like defending my fortress. It's one of the funnest parts of the game.

I believe that all racism we hold to other races is strictly because we don't see eye to eye with them.

Elves we like. They bring us plants for different booze and cute cuddly critters to make into murderbeasts.

Humans we like. They haul away all our junk goods. They also bring us much cloth and leather and meat for making socks and filling our bellies.

Dwarves we like. They bring us metals and gems so another soap-maker doesn't go mad from not having the materials for his great project.

Goblins we like. They bring us iron and training parters.

Kobolds we hate. They stole a sock once.

Elves are the perfect ideological enemy. Dwarves like Steel Elves like Wood. Bay12 likes super structures, Elves sleep in trees. They are the antithesis of all things dwarven.

goblin brings troll fur bag, which is hard to acquire ootherwise. if you fail to get them, at least they have rescued some children.

kobold is interesting to observe. i have a chamber where kobold specimens of varying appearance are exhibited in clear glass chest.

Some of you lot are too kind for the tree-hugging filth. They're obviously heretics deserving of a dwarven *BLAM*ming, that is, magma. Can't you see? They bring any metals at all and they keep bothering you with requests involving the number of trees you chop down. What I do with my own wood is my own business, thanks very much. I used to be on good terms with them, but now the only use they give me are the numerous cloth bins I seize from them. Whoever said that they were the antithesis of all things dwarven, I agree wholeheartedly.

Kobolds are dicks. 'Nuff said.

I hate all races equally, but for very different reasons:
Kobolds steal stuff, which can be really annoying if they steal something you needed.
Goblins try to kill your dwarves.
Elves refuse to let you cut down trees, which makes it near-impossible to make beds.
Humans are boring and bring you loads of useless stuff.
Dwarves try to annoy you by killing themselves.

Really, they all have their redeeming traits: kobolds are rather amusing and non-threatening, goblins and humans both bring you clothes, which can be rather useful if you haven't set up the infrastructure for a well-functioning clothes industry. Elves bring you loads of interesting animals. Both humans and elves can help you clean up a mess. And even if they are becoming a nuisance, you can always cage-trap them and use them as bait or as a trigger for a device, which you can't do with dwarves (without excessive amounts of work). Like I said, except for dwarves, they all have their redeeming traits.

Kobolds: I don't mind them. Generally by the time they start nosing around my militia is more than capable of gutting them like a cave fish, though if it weren't for the risk of attack by tribals I'd leave them the odd bit of stuff as gestures of good will; they want my garbage, not my booze, and that makes them at least worthy of getting the odd handout to me.
Goblins: Main draw of the vanilla game, as without them I'd have had have had no interest (as I enjoy raising strong militias and watching them mow the enemy down.)
Humans: Good friends to my dwarves, hauling away junk be it wood, worn out, or metal, and bringing affordable meat-bone packs (in the form of livestock,) and surface booze/seeds. I try not to make an enemy of them, as while my soldiers are generally more than capable of moping the floor with them usually, it means more piles of shit I need to get rid of (and due to erratic placement of magma and my laziness/distrust of moving hot rock, it usually isn't an option.)
Elves: Trade fairly with us and all will be well. We take thier cloth, wood, animals, and whatever else we may need at the time, and they carry away ill-fitting junk that's been screened for wood decor. However if they do anything to draw my ire more than once, and Peace's calls will be drowned out by the cries of elvish dead.
Dwarves: Drunken and oft belligerent idiots given to fits of often physics-defying madness, but I wouldn't have them any other way.

I only killed elves once, just for fun. Then next year they ambushed and killed a dorf. However, their new diplomat and caravan still arrived the year after. To be honest, I trade with them mainly for their pets. Their ambushes are annoying and I don't get useful equipments from them.

I haven't seen any kobolds in fortress mode since 40.13, odd.

Goblins are just business. I don't hate them actually.

Humans are OK, the only thing I don't like them is their clothes are too large for my dorfs.

Has anybody ever gotten a goblin caravan? The wiki says it's possible, however, I've never had one myself.

I think it's possible if they have some kind of pack animals. Never tested it myself though, and it might be complete hogwash.
