The best way for dealing with cats is polymorph wands.  If you have the music skill, you can tame them and then let something else do your dirty work. This is why I love the drakeling race so much.  It's a racial skill for them. ToEF isn't too bad for them.  Sure you take some minor constant damage, but that speed boost makes it a breeze to kite around the boss.

Just wait until you hit D:49.

So you enter D:50 with a slow effect.  If you're strong enough to get that far, you're strong enough to deal with it.  Hitting yourself with a few fire attacks can solve your speed malus if you are that worried.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

So, are the graphics an improvement to the game ? Last time I played ADOM for any meaningful length of time was many years ago.

So I just found a treasure trove of items in the Puppy Caves. Running a dwarf paladin. In those caves I got 3 spellbooks (web, bolt of cold, and knock), a large crystal shield (-1)[+10+2], a heavy stone club (+0 1d6+3), bracers of defense [+2+0], iron boots [-1+1], 4 blessed drakish skugari, 3 unidentified amulets, 4 unidentified rings, and a bunch of scrolls and potions. Most of this was looted from the vault at the end, which was filled with skeles, ghuls, and zombies.

I'll probably die soon to something stupid.

Depends on your definition of "improved graphics". If you like tiles and stuff that isn't ascii, yeah, I guess. I can't really judge it, since I prefer ascii.

I haven't played the newest version yet, but the screenshots I've seen didn't sit well with me.

If you just press F10 and you can switch anytime during gameplay between graphics and ASCII with the new version, good way to satisfy everyone

I just had a fantastic sword-born ratling duelist character. Got pretty far, saw lots of new things. Got to dwarftown for the first time. Bought a sweet adamantium saber (1d8+6) from the shop, had found a mithril girdle [+0+1] and a girdle of carrying and got permanent invisibility from a pool. Had found climbing equipment for scaling mountains. Had found the si and was making good profits from selling sis to the dwarftown shop. Was level 10.

Went down into the dwarf cemetery to try and kill the necromancer and put that dwarf dude to rest. Died to the necromancer. He hit harder than I expected in melee, and I actually had a hard time hitting him, unlike everything else I had fought up to that point. Was retreating in coward tactics when they blasted me with a bolt of cold. Man. I had a potion of super healing I could've used, but whatever.

Good run, saw lots of new things, didn't die in the first week. Was fun.

Nonnak can be surprisingly difficult in melee, I've had a fair few characters who had an easier time with Griff in melee than Nonnak. Though stopping by the pyramid and grabbing the mummy wraps for cold immunity helps a fair bit.

Have you guys tried the merchant class? My dwarf merchant is going surprisingly well. About as well as the duelist. Took the wealthy and very wealthy traits at the start and started the game with 16000(!) gold pieces. Got a sweet mithril mace (1d6+5) and a wooden shield and a ring of damage from the black market, still had 6000 gold left. The mace combined with the chain mail I started with helped me survive until I got healing.

Currently trying to work my way through the unspecific dungeon or whatever it's called to try and see what the fortress town shop has. I was going to go to dwarftown but the spacious cavern level proved too dangerous to crawl through at the moment. Got the mithril mace and a cursed tower shield (-2)[+7,+0] for blocking. I like the shop metagame, pawning trash to shops or using shop prices to identify equipment is a fun change of pace to killing mobs in dungeons.

I added some links of interest here if you want to learn more about ADoM:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=145970.msg5832250#msg5832250

Elona took some inspiration from ADoM for some mechanics and quests by the way.

It's Ancient Domains of Mystery, one of the older Roguelikes around that still updates. Chaos is leaking into the world, and you play the valiant hero(ine) who says "eh, sure, I can prolly stop that".

It's more story based than most roguelikes, there's quests, people to talk to, an alignment scale that changes depending on the quests you take or how you resolve them.

It's also one of the older types of roguelikes, where there's plenty of secrets and tricks to things. Not as bad as Nethack, but don't go standing on obsidian altars while a goblin, or orc, or chaotic being that speaks can see you.

I find the game interesting, but it's one of the polarizing roguelikes. I'd give it a few runs, and wikis are worth checking in my opinion. There's an ingame manual that helps too. It contains a lot of information, but it doesn't have hard numbers in it. It should be enough to point you in the right direction though. The download isn't big, so consider giving it a try.

After a bit more than a year since the last one, there's a new -public- release :
http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2015/07/adom-r58-is-available-now-for-everyone.html

But that said :
Quote
There's a bug with the public version, that sends the game into an infinite loop when you hit level 5. This is due to the Achievements system from the Steam version not being turned off properly.

No known workaround :(

A hotfix is being prepared, but it might take a while :X Sorry for the inconvenience!

So there should be a new public release soon as the bug is already fixed.

I've tried to play ADOM a few times but it's so different from a lot of roguelikes, and I usually give up before I get to/past the first dungeon or so. I blame the fact that I found Nethack before ADOM. I think I'll try to play it again this week, hopefully it goes better.

What is the deal with the graphical version on the website, is that released now? Is it free? And what is all this about JADE? I don't know much at all about the changes except that they had some huge crowd-funding thing a while back.
