Hanging
« on: November 23, 2014, 06:01:40 pm »

I'm not sure if this should be in here or some other forum but I've just downloaded the 40.16 game and I've noticed a significant slow down from version 34. The pace of the game seems much slower and the game hangs (mouse cursor whirls and the tab says Dwarf fortress unresponsive) almost every other command I make. I've seen a bunch of conflicting posts about the condition of the game since 40 released and I was wondering if these pauses and slowdowns are being experienced by everyone and just part of the development or if they are unique to me and I should try to reinstall.

While 40.xx will run slower in the later years you shouldn't get too many problems in the early years. But the problems you are reporting don't seem to be related to the usual FPS slow-downs.
What's your embark size? Maybe you have flowing liquids somewhere?

5x5 on 40.16 with dfhack and phoebus gfx from the pyLNP.  I've got a river right next to the fortress and cirtus trees with leaves..is the hanging considered FPS showdown? The sluggishness is playthroughable..its the hanging that is killing the game and I was wondering if that is normal?

Na, doesn't sound like the usual problem. Low FPS will just slow down the game but not hang the game. I'd recommend to try a 2x2 embark and see if it's still hanging. If it does it might be a driver problem. A 2x2 embark should not lag FPS for a long time.

Best to ask in the Starter Pack thread if the problems are still around after a smaller embark size.

Thx kitty..ya I wasnt sure where to post this question since the feedback for 40 has been all over the spectrum. 2x2 doesnt sound very fun..not much room to spread out and own the land..would difficult to get many bioms too.

The 2x2 was just to test if it is "normal" FPS lag. But I actually enjoy playing a 2x2 embark atm. Everything is so fast. =D

.... I just read that as "Circus trees"... so um. Would the fruit be clowns? Would the trunks be made of candy?

...Don't mind me, I'll be over here.

In the new update ive had to switch to small worlds with 125 years of history.  Fixed all the lag and made legends easier to navigate!

Also putting G FPS to 14 helps with a 3x3 embark and sound disabled through init.

Putting df on realtime might also help

The only really significant performance change I've noticed with the new version (though I've yet to make any really big forts) is that saving the game takes quite a bit longer than it used to.

2x2 embark is really fun, actually, imo.

I'm doing a 1x4 atm.

From the title of the thread I assumed this was going to be about whether animals die when they are dropped while chained up...

Is it bad that I hoped for this thread to be about making in-game gallows?

I'm with Aslandus and Badger Storm, I thought this was putting a retracting bridge under someone on restraints.

A 5x5 is a very large embark. If you have an embark that big on top of a large world map with a long history then I can see it causing serious performance problems for even a very high end computer. As other have said, the fact that the game is becoming unresponsive sounds like this may not be just normal FPS loss. You should definitely see how the game responds when you scale everything back a bit.

A 5x5 is a little under 3 times the size of the standard 3x3 embark and more than 6 times the size of a 2x2. If you want to capture multiple biomes and geographical features I suggest creating long thin embark area instead of a square one, something like a 5x2 or even a 2x6. Both should run much better than a 5x5 and still give you a lot of space and biome/terrain variety to work with. I personally tend to aim for the product of the two dimensions equaling 12 or less.
