Also does happiness matter? According to Dwarf Therapist my dwarves are ALWAYS miserable.

Just as an addendum to what Metalax said above, I don't think Dwarf Therapist has been changed to reflect the recent happiness change yet; I'm pretty sure it's still looking for a "happiness" value from the old system, and is ignoring the stress level, so it'll permanently display at 0, you'll need to check the stress from ingame until it's changed.

quality is more important, unless you are making the thrones out of like obsidian or another higher value stone.

It's all down to value and quality; the more valuable the item, and by extension the material it's made from, the happier dwarves will be. Wood has a very low value, I believe, whereas some types of stone are much higher, so all things considered you're better off using stone for furniture, as it tends to be the same or higher value and is far more abundant than wood. Also you're probably more likely to have highly skilled masons than carpenters, so you should get higher quality furniture more often.

I don't know how much preferred materials affect things, though; you sometimes get dwarves with a preference for a type of wood. I don't know if a low-value but favourite material is better than a high-value material, for them. Either way, I'd just use stone, or you can use high value metals if you want especially lavish furniture for nobles.

I always have superior carpenters and substandard masons.

I think most wood, like most stone, has no multipliers. Except, like I said, with obsidian, and things like flux stone.

From what I recall on preferences, if you have a choice between generic stone and favoured wood/stone pick the favoured material for better thoughts. But if you use valuable material such as higher level ores or metal then the increased value can be more important than the preference as far as total happiness goes(assuming equal quality of course).

In addition to things been said: the most important thing is the value of the room. I play a nanomap (48x48) and I dig an entire level to use as a dining hall. It is legendary even without furniture, just by sheer size.

Thanks for the input guys but I do have a cooker cooking all the time "Fine meals" I don't know if it uses plump helmets though.
Go to kitchen menu (z - left - enter) and disable all seeds and plants from cooking. You can enable them when you have a reliable amount of seeds.

Also how exactly do I order the farmers to only place seeds on bags and not barrels?
Make a stockpile near your farms. Set it to only accept seeds and not to use barrels or bins. Disable seeds in all your other stockpiles.

how do you get so many plump seeds? I always have only 4-5 at max and can barely use them to farm due to being so scarce.
It's the effect of legendary grower, I suppose. One grower can keep 200 dwarfs fed.

The fortresses are penal colonies.
The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.

Made an area with 5 beds for 8 squad members and filled their squad schedule with training minimum 2 members and made the room to be "Barracks" allow them to sleep and train there but how do I know if they are training? I see them standing there casually they leave a weapon or two on the floor but when I check Dwarf Therapist the fighting skills dont seem to be increasing

Did you set the squad to "active/training" (or whichever alert contains the squad schedule that you created) on the military alerts page?

I'm pretty sure anything but plump helmets will produce a seed when cooking, and quarry bushes can only be cooked (and aren't edible otherwise)

Is there a way to see the value of my current meeting hall? Wanna know if it's legendary or not etc

Also do I need to give "free" stuff of 5k+ value to random traders for monarchy to come to my fortress and is there any kind of good thing about monarchy?

Or I just need to sell/trade these things to traders and once I reach a certain thresold the monarchy comes?

Something to consider, if the queen does show up, then you become the mountainhome and you no longer get a liaison to make requests to. Though I am pretty sure a caravan still shows up.

If you want to see the value of your dining hall, assign it to an owner and check their possessions screen. It'll show up as "<quality> Dining Hall".

To attract monarchy, you need to 'o'ffer 5k of goods, I think. the keybinding may have changed. The good thing about monarchy is that you are the best fort in your civilisation! I suppose you could consider it something of a goal to aim for.

that explains why I am still a ducky, I have plenty of wealth and numbers for being the mountainhome.

Bastards don't want to just demand ridiculous amounts for their wares, they want me to flat out offer money too >:(

Also any tips on how to make a proper siege defese? This is my outside fortress:


I wanted to place siege near stairs to shoot when enemies cross the outer fortress and attempt to at least get 1 or 2+ down before they met my army however I'm not sure how to setup the siege properly so that it will attack since it's under a mountain.
