Exploit of the day #2
« on: November 22, 2014, 12:09:55 pm »

See also Exploit of the Day #1

Today's exploit is "Sand is worth negative 9 embark points"

How exploity is it? : ***00
How easy is it? : **000
How stupid is it? : ****0
Where do you find out about it? : I just noticed (but I wasn't the first)

Do you use it (intentionally) in your fortresses?

Do you think it should be fixed?

To explain, you can add bags to your embark and each bag is worth 10 embark points. You can also add sand and each sand is worth 1 embark point. However the sand comes inside bags, so you can embark with a thousand sand bags, empty out the sand, then sell the bags to the first caravan that arrives.

I haven't actually tried this myself. :P

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

you can already set your embark points so it is not much of an exploit, really.

I must admit I intentionally bring a wide variety of sand and other goods that come with free containers during embark just so I get some extra containers. I never sell the containers but rather just keep them on hand for early storage expansion.

I bring a lot of sand in my favorite embark profile because I try to get a glass industry going very early. The trouble with bags is that a lot of them are being "wasted" by storing seeds you don't want or need. Those 5 rhubarb seeds will sit there in their bag and never to be used just cluttering up the place. I should probably look into cooking them or smashing them but the micro...

can any seeds be made into paste? Like could you do that with plum and pear and such seeds, because those are useless anyway.

Some, but not most. IIRC looking at the pre-release RAWs Toady posted for the new plants, most nuts could be ground into paste, and also stuff like flax and hemp seeds. Rapeseed and olive pits, obviously.

Paste from the pits of pit fruits? ...delicious, I'm sure.
