I don't know if it shows up in preferences but it does happen to animals.

It's not super noticeable because the only functional difference between a male and female dwarf is that one can has babies. I only noticed homosexual animals when I couldn't get any piglets.

Bisexuality is common in animals, but homosexuality is rare, except for sheep.

and lions I think.

Bisexuality allows for children though, so it's not an issue when breeding livestock.

There's this thing, with some snakes, where they will all become this tumultuous orgy ball, all wrapped together when it's time to mate. The males know where to put things because of the pheromones the females send out. Except sometimes, some males will emit those same pheromones, quite intentionally apparently.

This is only a portion of the list of animals that love same sex action, hey cavies are on that list.

“Necking” behaviour in giraffe takes place only in all male herds.

This is consistent with my impression of how animals behave.  The males will mount anything if they can't mount a female, but that does not mean they prefer males.

I have seen two female angel fish making alternate spawning on a rock, but again, they are without a male and think they are mating normally.

I think this is taking Gay Pride too far, to code in homosexuality as a preference in animals.

sigh. why not look at the wikipedia article. What you -think- animals do and what they actually do are different. You don't have to believe in science for it to be right.

There is a lot of homosexuality and bisexuality in the animal kingdom, regardless of females (and that wouldn't explain homosexual females.)

Hell, female goats will get busy with each other for the sole purpose of turning on a guy goat they want to get with.

It has nothing to do with gay pride, it's called biology.

Biology or not (And yes, this is biology), I would be very sad to find my only male animal to be homosexual, because I'm not sure this actually happens all that time in nature... Maybe just bring down the frequency, such things may get annoying very fast.

I don't actually think the frequency is that high. The actual problem is animals that don't want to have a relationship outside of marriage. Which, combined with homosexuality causes problems.

I think this is taking Gay Pride too far, to code in homosexuality as a preference in animals.

My guess is that it's a bug, in that it's taking the 'orientation' code which determines whether or not a creature will marry, and then applying it to animals which don't get married in any event.  It's probably because in DF, no sentient creature can reproduce without marrying, so that's the part of the code that gets transferred over, even though it doesn't make sense.

Most animals will engage in homosexual behavior, but it's very rare to find animals that are exclusively homosexual to the extent of avoiding an available opposite-sex partner.  Giraffe males have a lot of same-sex mountings, but that's because the mounting usually comes after fighting, and males fight a lot.  These giraffes will still mount females if given the opportunity.

Sheep seem to be an exception in that there are apparently enough homosexual rams that sheep breeders have to take them into account in real life, but even this is only 8%.

I still think the best fix for this would be animal weddings. It would be totes adorable.

If that were the case you'd expect animals to be monogamous. I think it's more likely that only animals that are roll not interested in the opposite sex won't breed. Pure homosexuality might not be super common but it's manifestation in the game is about 5% of animals not breeding which doesn't seem particularly crazy.

Where do you think I got the original source of the giraffe data?  I think reading the original sources is also a good way to educate myself.  That is why, after all, they are required in a good Wikipedia article, so that opinionated fools can't write an authoritative sounding article that is completely fabricated.

oh god, you really just tried to make an argument against climate science? Yea, okay, that happened. Look, you made a random assumption about data that you say you read, and ignorantly linked it all back to gay pride going too far.

You're not a biologist. You are just making assumptions off of raw data. And apparently you ONLY looked at giraffes, when I linked a small section of a list of animals that have homosexual behavior.
