Gelding...without animal sorting?
« on: November 22, 2014, 08:16:42 am »

So there was that lovely blog update that went up sometime after I last checked the site yesterday and it mentioned that you can now geld your males and that breeding is done within touch range!

...Which would be fantastic, if it wasn't for the fact that you still have difficulty knowing which pet you're flagging for slaughter (you can only tell male or female on the Z menu).

Will we finally have a way to check which are the plumper animals without bouncing around menus?

It's not implemented it's just a feature that's being added and is apparently in a working or close to working state.

You can also use the[ u]nits menu to inspect a creatures description, zoom to it, and assign it for slaughter individually with [p]rofessions.

I wonder if it will work (or will be able to be made to work) on civilised creatures.

...

No, I'm not saying "eunuch slaves".
Nope.

It is implemented as a specific type of wound to a "geldable" bodypart.  Once the DFHack crew reverse-engineers the wound, it will likely be visible and editable in third-party tools.

Then come the decisions about how to represent this to the player.  Waiting to see the Dwarf Therapist gender symbol with the little arrowhead snipped off.

But it's currently hard to know which unit you're moving into a pasture.

Unless you can "nickname" all your geldings, I'll see a lot of "move male #1 to the field, check male #1, see that male #1 is not the correct male, move male #1 to the next field...start over with male #2" clutter after the next update.  :-\

What I always do to sort them is look at their relative places on the unit list; if the dog I want butchered is the fourth dog up from the cavy boar on the unit list, it will be fourth up from the cavy on the animals list.

You know what it will work on?

Mountain gnomes...

Why bother neutering mountain gnomes? Just kill them; they're useless.

Also hoping we could sterilize females through a similar function.

I'm not sure the addition of genitalia, even if its sole function is to be subsequently removed by player actions, is likely to help the game, really.

It's a dwarf.  Their natural habitat is "trapped on the wrong side of a wall".

Flinging children halfway across the map to land in magma is good, wholesome fun, but extramarital reproduction?  Why, that's just unseemly!

Come on, you KNOW you want to see all the resulting LOL posts about Smutsu getting speared in the <CENSORED>, and it getting lodged in the wound.

I wonder if it will resolve the age old curiosity of dwarven spore based reproduction though.  Finally, a way to keep married couples from having babies!

Since when were game mechanics added in order of usefulness, ease of implementation or sanity? This is a game rendered in ascii where a fort can be destroyed by convicting a dead ostrich of murder.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

We aren't getting genetalia, just a tag linked to a body part that gives you the option to sterilize an animal at the farmers workshop:

Quote
Today saw the addition of an oft-requested feature -- the ability to geld! We stayed away from new parts, but there's a body part tag for it on appropriate male critters, as well as a job and so on. The job takes place at the farmer's workshop after the animal is designated in a way similar to slaughtering. The process is modeled with a wound within the existing framework.

All breeding also occurs within touch range now, though there isn't a new activity for it or anything. Some more tools for breeding and animal population control are now in place. Due to the raw changes, it won't be available in old saves without tweaking the raws.

To avoid having to create new bodies for the males, there was also a small addition to the raws to allow body part tags to be added/removed after a caste has bodies. It only works with the simple tags like LOWERBODY/STANCE/SIGHT/GUTS/etc. rather than tissue flags at this point, but it's useful for a few things. For example, after declaring the male caste, [SET_BP_GROUP:BY_TYPE:LOWERBODY][BP_ADD_TYPE:GELDABLE].

That string at the bottom is presumably what you would add to a caste's entry to make them geldable.

And like it says; not necessarily getting spores anymore; pregnancy occurs after a male comes near enough a female to touch her, but mating isnt an activity that can happen; pregnancy just occurs from wandering about bumping into each other.

However that tag should also allow us to muck about in other ways with body parts on a specific creature or caste of creature without having to make quite as many new body definitions. Which is awesome.

This also means that you can gather the foreskins of thy enemies, in Adventure mode.

I hope one of the tools for animal breeding is an incubator to make it so hatching eggs doesn't disrupt egg food production.
