Telltale's Game of Thrones - preorder on Steam
« on: November 21, 2014, 01:56:12 pm »

http://store.steampowered.com/app/330840/

This happened.
This might be one of the very, very few games that I will actually pay lots of money to buy early and play until the end. Hopefully the continued releases of seasons and episodes for GoT won't slow down the work on The Walking Dead and vice versa.

Show was bad compared to books.

Not getting a game based off a bad show based off an okayish book series.

Sounds like a simple quest-adventure type of game.

Unless you're into GoT, I guess there's no point in playing that game.

I am very much into GoT, and I am aware that the show was nowhere near the quality of the books. Still, I'm eager to see how they execute this.

I imagine it'll basically be death simulator 2014.

Yeah, it seems they target demographic is "people who really wants to stabs Cersei in the face".

Telltale did a good job with Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us and they seem to really understand the atmosphere of the works they are basing their games on.

I don't like adventure games but the stories they tell are amazing. I hope they'll release the episodes faster this time though.

This seems so fantastically pointless given that nothing that happens in the game can possibly affect continuity.

They circumvented this by making the game take place in a different time frame or creating new characters within the universe in their earlier games. I bet they'll do something like that again. I always had high hopes for Telltale games and they never failed to meet them.

They kind of can't do it in a game like this. The characters are kind of set in stone unless they make up a completely new kingdom that cannot possibly exist.

I'm guessing that the game will take place at a lower level than the books or the TV show. Sure, we might have some cameos (as the screenshots obviously show) and what happens to Tyrion, Cersei, Roose & Ramsay Bolton and the lot of them is set in stone, but the noble families of Westeros are pretty big and what we see in the book and the TV show is just a very small part of the world.
We can easily have dramatic, high-stakes series about what happens in the lands of some Stark bannermen, and any noble house can be represented as an as-of-yet unmentioned cousin, twice removed, without it being particularly unrealistic.

They do this sort of thing all the time in virtually any IP.  Introducing heretofore briefly mentioned House Forrester*, which GRRM quite forgot to add to the lengthy list of Stark bannermen because his personae dramatis already nearly qualifies as a separate book.  Brief but relatively meaningless cameos by major characters!  Slightly more meaningful interactions with the gazillions of minor characters that did make the index, that you are otherwise unlikely to see again!  Subplots completely parallel to the canon story!  Interaction with famous locales before or after they become famous!  Characters commenting on main canon events as you pursue your non-canon events!  Politics, battles, and intrigue on another scale**!

I think there is plenty of room in Westeros for more stories.  How good it is is up to Telltale, and based on their previous work, I am optimistic.  However I notice they have a Borderlands game in the works as well on nearly the same release schedule, which I think must mean they may have done some hiring and split the teams.  In the case of these products, its mostly art/writing/voicework however.

* mentioned a single time as a clan sworn to House Glover according to my Kindle, in aDwD
** quite probably smaller

I think a Blackwood v Bracken game would be fun.

Yeah, we are playing as House Forrester, as it seems. Never heard of that house and there isn't much info about them anyway. They are apparently bannerman of House Glover and they are loyal to Starks. It seems the game will continue the tradition of giant amounts of sympathetic POVs with the 5 POVs we'll have. All of them will be either related to House Forrester as a dynasty member or a person in service of the house.

If this is like the other Telltale games, big time characters like Cersei will probably have very brief appearances, and I'd rather have it that way.
