According to my post history, last time I was here was in 2012. I've got my new fortress all generated and stuff, and so far I've noticed that trees actually look like trees now. Anything else really major?

Creatures can climb and jump now. Dwarves have hundreds of different emotions instead of the sliding scale of miserable-ecstatic. The world continues to be simulated during play, so stuff like inherited positions will actually be inherited.

Also, a bunch of other stuff I can't recall.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

You can take fruit from trees. We've got step ladders to access the higher branches. Also, depending on when you left, you may have missed DF2012, but since I only became part of the community recently, I don't really know what was added with that. I think it may have been all sorts of necromancy-related stuff.

Oh yeah. Necromancy and minecarts became things with DF2012.

If you played DF2012 (34.11 IRC), you're pretty done, the major changes are as said in multy- tile trees, fuits and tons of new plants to use, and the fact that the world is now simulated also during play. This expecially change the way enemy attacks you (you have to be really close to them, and to be reaaally interesting to them) and the fact that now it's a little bot harder to keep FPS high.

Cutting down trees now gives you ridiculous amounts of logs, while mining yields a lot less boulders than it used to. Use wood for everything, save the stone for things that you can't build with wood.

Well, this is a bit exagerated... stone tile yeld boulders only 1/4 of the times (roughly), but you'll still have tons and tons of syone to play with.

Wood instead is much more frequent, but if you have to keep your metal industry fueled and you're not in a heavily forested biome (or at least woodland) you'll have to keep an eye for it.

Things climb and none of the wall defenses you used to be able to depend on are likely to be safe.

I've watched legendary climber cats and dorfs scramble around on smoothed natural stone walls like they were going up and down stairs, gobs with normal climbing will have more trouble, but not enough to plan around said wall doing more than being an obstacle or diversion.

I've only recently come back to playing after a several year break as well. Here are a few of the things I've noticed.

Multi-tile trees.
Many new plants.
Fruit trees. Fallen fruit can be gathered from the ground and dwarves in a gathering zone will automatically use stepladders to gather fruit from up to two z-levels above. Anything higher on the trees requires the construction of a scaffold to stand on.
Many plants now give more than one product when harvested/gathered. e.g. strawberries give a cookable strawberry plant as well as the strawberries.
Several types of seeds(as well as olives) can now be processed(mill to a paste, then squeeze in a press) to produce oil used in the production of soap. This removes the requirement for butchering animals for animal fat.

Mining skill no longer determines how many tiles will drop a boulder/gem. Boulders now drop 25% of the time from any rock or ore wall mined, while gems drop 100% of the time.
Boulders now get split into four blocks at the mason, while ores will smelt into four bars. Overall this results in an increase in available building material for constructions, reduced supply for stone crafts and similar stone items and the same amount of metal bars available.

Many creatures can now climb and jump. Rough walls are easier to climb than smoothed or constructed walls. Building a two level wall and then an overhang on the third level will stop climbers, as long as there is no nearby tree or hill to give them a spot to jump from.

Necromancy is now a thing. Evil biomes with a hunting industry or after a siege can now result in much FUN.

The world outside of your fort now continues to be simulated. This allows for wars to continue and inherited positions to be inherited but can also result in much slowdown while processing it.

It's been too long, Dwarf Fortress.

Let the Dwarfening begin anew.

Nah, I was here for that one. It was basically the last major update I saw.

Thanks for all the quick responses, guys. One more question, if anyone was around back then, did the slade testing continue once I left?

Discipline is now important. A quick-drafted militia without discipline can easily panic in fights. Give your starting dwarfs one level in discipline for emergencies like the inevitable embark on top of an alligator infested river. Your dwarfs will still get butchered but it makes for more interesting combat logs. ;P
It seems most migrants get one level for free.

Fighting the undead should be avoided, especially with an inexperienced militia. Zombies can carry weapons and armor, never tire and feel no fear. Not an opponent you want to fight in a fresh fort. I had a necromancer with 24 armed zombies show up in the first winter, so you might want to rush that drawbridge!

yea screw necromancers.

The last time I fought them, I swore I had killed them all, but I was getting ressurecting body parts all over the place.

I believe in addition to all that other stuff, hospitals and dwarven justice got changed so they are actually useful now, and grazing was changed so your elephants won't starve due to the sheer amount of grass they need...

There's also a bunch of new plants for above ground farms... good luck figuring out which ones are useful...
